I'm not sure "clever" is the word, as such, but certainly the lack of intellectual heavyweights in the world of Westminster these days is becoming more than a little wearying. When Jacob Rees-Mogg is being interviewed as if he actually has an insightful view on anything other than the exploitation of developing countries for his own personal profit, you do rather get the urge to throw your hands up and say "that's it, I've had it with politics". That Rees-Mogg is actually a serious contender for chair of the Treasury select committee, that Labour feel they have to support Nicky Morgan to foil him is an indication of just how far this country has lost touch with anything that resembles common sense.Perhaps the clever thing to do is just give up on politics

Any source for that? Link?
If they were serious, the Tories would go for Hammond, who might make them face up to the horrors of Brexit. But they aren't a serious party. Both main parties in the UK are broken.

As "preposterous" as Jeremy Corbyn becoming Labour leader, perhaps? Or even Donald Trump as POTUS??
Anyway, the thought of Leadsom getting it is "preposterous" enough - but that actually seems to be a genuine runner now.

Article about Rees-Mogg, mentioning online poll
http://bellacaledonia.org.uk/2017/06/20 ... -crackers/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The same (?) online poll, today:
https://www.pollstation.uk/who_should_b ... der/result" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
currently has Rees-Mogg massively in lead with 57%,
Boris next on 13%, 7169 sample
Sounds very fishy.

Given that the UK is very quickly turning into the sick joke of Europe, making a living embodiment of the butt of the joke national leader will make automatic sense to a party whose core values lie in contrariness and an obstinate denial of modern realities. The polls (the real ones) don’t at present take Rees-Mogg remotely seriously, but I think it would be a mistake to join and vote for him. Such a move could, as the Turdmeister Toby Young knows very well, easily backfire *.
Jacob Rees-Mogg could become the British equivalent of Donald Trump.

Aren't you worried about the enthusiasm dissipating?
I know I am, I've been waiting for decades for a left wing alternative but I fear it's on gossamer wings, walking a tightrope more slippy than Mr Slippy, the slippiest man ever who could slip out of the most non slippy thing you could possibly imagine.
A hint of caution is all I offer.

The Guardian understands that the crux of the Tory-DUP deal in London rests mainly on an economic package for Northern Ireland including increased capital spending on health and education, the granting of special lower corporation tax status for the region and the possible abolition in the province of air passenger duty tax.
One controversial element that the DUP wants built into the deal is the extension of the Military Covenant to Northern Ireland. The covenant promises to give priority medical treatment, and special help with housing and school places for children of former and current members of the armed services
