In actual fact, public opinion has been moving leftwards on welfare/benefits in the last few years as on some other topics.
(its only perhaps immigration, amongst the major issues, where most people remain stubbornly reactionary even now)

memory playing tricks. can anyone help me.
circa late 1970s a club in Manchester, upstairs they had tales of the unexpected.
I recall a wide stage (rather the length of the venue than the width) and stairs going up on the left. upstairs was a chill area with, as I say, tales of the unexpected playing.

Not so easy when, after it going almost totally unmentioned during the GE campaign (what a contrast with 2 years ago) the MAGIC MONEY TREE has been shown to be alive and well
except that they're not magic. they're just trees that play music.

It wasn't the Factory/Russel Club, Cyprus Tavern and I DON'T THINK it was the Poly disco.
Nor was it Belle Vue.
Squat?
Maybe the Poly after all but wasn't the stage at the end?
Too many hazy memories.
Need time travel to check.

Re: Wednesday 5th July 2017
This sounds like the latest iteration of what they and the lib dems set up in late 2010, saying it was a consultation on national and local government regulations and inviting the public to email their comments on regulations to 'burdens at gov.uk'.Eric_WLothian wrote:Interesting article on the Grenfell inquiry from George Monbiot:
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfr ... y-exchange" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;The Grenfell inquiry will be a stitch-up. Here’s why
...Let me give you an example. On the morning of 14 June, as the tower blazed, an organisation called the Red Tape Initiative convened for its prearranged discussion about building regulations. One of the organisation’s tasks was to consider whether rules determining the fire resistance of cladding materials should be removed for the sake of construction industry profits.
Please bear with me while I explain what this initiative is and who runs it, as it’s a perfect cameo of British politics. It’s a government-backed body, established “to grasp the opportunities” that Brexit offers to cut “red tape” – a disparaging term for public protections. It’s chaired by the Conservative MP Sir Oliver Letwin, who has claimed that “the call to minimise risk is a call for a cowardly society”. It is a forum in which exceedingly wealthy people help decide which protections should be stripped away from lesser beings.
Among the members of its advisory panel are Charles Moore, who was editor of the Daily Telegraph and the chair of an organisation called Policy Exchange. He was also best man at Letwin’s wedding. Sitting beside him is Archie Norman, the former chief executive of Asda and the founder of Policy Exchange. He was once Conservative MP for Tunbridge Wells – and was succeeded in that seat by Greg Clark, the minister who now provides government support for the Red Tape Initiative...

One in three nursing homes in England 'fail safety'
https://www.theguardian.com/society/201 ... is-failing" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The Care Quality Commission said that of 4,000 nursing homes, which care for the most vulnerable people at the end of their lives, 32% have been rated inadequate or requires improvement and 37% have been told they must improve safety.
While nursing homes come out worst, services grouped as “community social care” emerge best. These include sheltered housing with “extra-care” support and so-called “shared lives” schemes whereby people accept others needing care and support into their own homes.
