LGA response to 'unt re.delayed transfers of care mentioned in written statement

“The sudden shift in focus, so late in the process to prioritise delayed transfers of care, and the threat of a review of funding allocations if associated targets are not met, is completely unacceptable to local government."

This is extremely disappointing and a step back for integrating health and care. It has left the LGA with no choice but to withdraw our support for the guidance#

“Councils are doing all they can to reduce delays in getting patients out of hospital and back into the community. But social care is about far more than alleviating pressure on health. It is a vital and essential service in its own right.

“Councils face an annual £2.3 billion funding gap in social care by 2020 because of pressures elsewhere in the system. This is why it is vital councils have freedom and flexibility over how the money is spent.

“Ultimately, this publication undermines integration, increases the difficulty of making important preparations for meeting increased demand during the winter, and is likely to make the social care crisis worse.

Vince Cable recently said that if Lib Dems can “occupy that enormous ground in the middle of politics we’ve got tremendous opportunity”.
He’s only part right. To occupy is to inhabit a space that is otherwise vacant. There is a missing middle in British politics but that’s the point – it’s missing. There’s nothing there to inhabit. First it needs to be built in terms of a reality in Parliament and an idea based vision. This requires leadership.

PfY commented last night that it has gone a bit quiet here recently, it has but I wonder if that is anything more than an inevitable post-election lull.

Though yes, it would be good to see some old regulars back.

I see from the above that May is trying to exhume "the deficit" as a bogeyman.

Not so easy when, after it going almost totally unmentioned during the GE campaign (what a contrast with 2 years ago) the MAGIC MONEY TREE has been shown to be alive and well

Yes. I wondered if she was trying to mollify George Osborne (with an eye on better press in the Standard) - and I see from Politics Live, Guardian, that I wasn't alone in having that thought.

The Conservatives essentially set pay in the public services according to ministerial whim for seven years, downgrading expert advice. Now they want to call the technocrats back

I can't seem to remember the media highlighting the issues surrounding Osborne's arbitrary decisions about public sector pay at the time, mind you.
