People are being harrassed, given set hours, docked money if they don't follow strict rules, told they're being filmed all the time so they stick to said strict rules. All for way less than the minimum wage. From what I could gather some were earning £50 for a 60 hour week. Which to my feeble maths skills equates to less than a pound an hour.

And currently this is legal in this country. Because apparently these people are 'self employed', despite all the evidence to the contrary.

But do the tories care when it means they can blather on about record employement figures? Will May do anything about it after the summer recess?

I suspect the answer to both of those is 'no'.

The case for a huge expansion of electronic monitoring using GPS was unproven, but the Ministry of Justice pursued an overly ambitious and high risk strategy anyway. Ultimately it has not delivered.

The GPS on my phone (presumably largely the same technology as in these tags) currently seems to think I'm 50 metres below sea level according to the altimiter, and as I'm indoors and it can't get a proper track on the satellites it would appear to believe I'm wandering around randomly about half a mile away.

GPS doesn't work indoors, it's as simple as that, as a result of the laws of physics. And even outside it can be a bit patchy at times due to both the laws of physics and basic Euclidean geometry.

My suprise level registers approximately zero when I see this nonsense being bought by scientifically illiterate ministers from rapacious companies like G4S.

It's 21'st century snake oil. And the fact ministers can't do a 5 minute Google search asking what GPS is and how it works is obviously a joke, but also what we've come to expect in this benighted country.
