I think I've worked out why a link I posted yesterday didn't work, it was from Google to an article on Conservative Home & linked to a encrypted URL (HTTPS).
If you go directly to the website it's has unencrypted http links and there's no problem.
I probably just (stupidly) clicked to accept the HTTPS site (obv. because who wouldn't trust conservativehome).
Anyway, that's my theory, it's all Google's fault.

Governments have to invest in the fourth industrial revolution
Interesting on investment, or rather lack of, from the private sector despite the almost complete absence of investment from the public sector. So much for the "crowding out" theory.

Morning all...

Ouch.

My Tory party has gambled away its reputation. It needs more than a new leader

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfr ... new-leader
So how did the party of Burke bring us the maelstrom of 2017? Tory governments once claimed themselves our benevolent parents. But living in modern Britain feels like being one of a family of anxious, squabbling children whose parents have abandoned us to get drunk at the casino. Since the night of the Brexit referendum, when my Tory friend celebrated, sterling has lost 12% of its value against the dollar. Tory policies once promised a haven from global unrest. Now, they seem to provoke it.

Edu select committee should be very entertaining given the firepower that Labour brings to it.

Lucy Powell joins two teachers in education committee line-up

http://schoolsweek.co.uk/lucy-powell-jo ... e-line-up/
It was reported on Saturday that Emma Hardy, a former teacher, NUT activist and Schools Week columnist, had been elected to serve on the committee.

And it has since been confirmed that Thelma Walker, a former headteacher who was elected to represent Colne Valley in June, will also serve, as will James Frith, the former head of careers education social enterprise All Together.
Excellent.

And re yesterday's chatter following the Doctor Who announcement, the Labour party has actually had two women leaders.

(both short term, yes, but constitutionally fully in charge of the leadership in that period - not just "acting")

There is another major party who has never had a woman even temporarily in charge.......

More on "David Davis has left the building" -
David Davis, the Brexit secretary, has already left Brussels - not because he left his notes at home (see 10.08am) but because most of the talks this week are being conducted by officials, not by the principals. He will be back on Thursday when he will hold talks with Michel Barnier before the two men give a press conference. (Politics Live, Guardian)

Claimants with more than two children
4. Claimants with three or more children or QYPs will not be able to make a new
claim for Universal Credit, unless the claimant:
• has been in receipt of Universal Credit within the previous six month period
and is making a re-claim
• is making a new claim as a single person within one month of a previous
joint claim ending, because they are no longer a member of a couple
5. New Universal Credit claimants with more than two children or QYPs will need
to apply for Child Tax Credit and any other benefits they may be entitled to
including HB.
It's not just me is it? 4 says you can't claim UC if you've got more than 2 kids, but 5 calls you a UC claimant anyway.

A British diplomat has said Brexit talks on the issue of a frictionaless border in Ireland are “stuck” because a solution cannot be found in isolation from the final deal on the UK’s relationship with the EU.

Neil Holland, deputy head of mission at the British Embassy, told the Magill summer school in Donegal on Monday that the Good Friday Agreement on peace in Northern Ireland had “the highest level of agreement” possible from all sides involved in discussions.

“The problem is how to get from A to B, how to get from the political assertion to the realities soft border,” said Holland.

You can’t have a discussion about what Northern Ireland should look like before we know the nature of the replacement relationship, so we are kind of stuck. Until we know the shape of the future agreement [it’s very difficult to know how that would look.] (Politics Live, Guardian)
