Switzerland puzzles over citizenship test after lifelong resident fails
Funda Yilmaz, 25, was turned down for Swiss citizenship despite living all her life in the country and fluently speaking the language

Should foreign residents have to know how to recycle waste oil before they can apply for citizenship? Are people who shop at local corner shops more deserving citizens than those who frequent supermarkets? And what kind of sport is “hornussing”?

I work in Canton Valais which is the home of all bizarre Swiss sports - of which there are many!

Mainly involving mountain farmers who only come into the big towns (>100 inhabitants) a couple of times a year

Reminds me interest bearing loans with charge replacement for the incentive for saving the State three times as much per week at bare minimum sick/disabled homeowners you are next you are being unfair to non homeowners in same position and their necessary rooms deemed spare(long version)legislation in place.Increased charging for social care to allow work, live in reasonable dignity in abeyance.(Container ships on standby)

I really despair at some of these things

I don't see being a labour supporter and socialist means that the richer should be excluded from state support, rather I think they should pay a fair contribution to support the society they live in, with the expectation they will pay more than they will receive back. By just taking from them but excluding them from all aspects of support doesn't seem to be a way to promote a healthy society

This sort of approach just makes people resentful and doesn't actually save that much money. If people receive money and truly feel they don't need it then they can use it to donate to charities or support groups.

It is the same for tuition fees - I think education is too important to be messed around with so I support the significant reduction or removal for all. Some call this a 'middle class benefit'. My view would be that if there is a problem getting people from poorer backgrounds to university then this should be tackled at source. I am not sure burdening all students with a massive debt is the best way to solve this

Oh heavilly divisive,I think they know this. They have already breached some fundamentally principles to me.eg.based on need, default necessary rooms for care being spare-still arguing about and loan as mentioned above which with timing I have avoided, embarrassment prevents me in outlining the savings to the State by our outrageous behaviour in not moving when we couldn't anyway.

Seriously though, I've been off camping with my brother who's a teacher and he was fucking spitting feathers about what Hammond was saying about public sector workers being overpaid because they had a half decent pension. I do believe his rant began along the lines of 'Where's my company car and my expense account you cu*t'. My brother got a good degree at a good University but decided to go into teaching because he genuinely believes in trying to make a difference in kids lives. He's no saint but I can see why this kind of shit pisses him off when those he knew at university who went into the private sector are now raking it in compared to him.

He used to be a Tory voter. We argued endlessly. But then Gove happened and he saw the light. I try not to say I told you so but I must confess I do so occasionally. And now he's the union rep for the NUT in his school. The Tories are right to be fearful of how many in the public sector they are fucking off.

Incomes in south-east of England 'are 25% higher than in West Midlands'
I found myself in the middle of a wedding in a country pub in Lancashire over the weekend by accident. The men all had the hired suits on and the women had some quite extraordinary headgear on show. And, as it does, politics came up. As far as I could discern while drinking their free booze they were all Tories because they were all farmers or farmers wives and offspring. I tried to point out them that without the CAP their entire existence would be uneconomical and the Australians and Kiwi's would surely render their business models defunct and flood our market with cheap lamb and beef while insisting all our susbsidies were got rid of.

(This is genuinely true, this really happened, I really am that much of a dick as you know).

Anyway despite a few responses along the lines of "who the fuck are you" they were mostly friendly, probably due to the 2 grand put behind the bar, and mostly in total and complete denial. Spouting all sorts of nonsense about how their wool, which goes to make carpets, would be regarded to be exceptional simply because it was English.

And then one of them noticed I wasn't exactly English and wasn't exactly enamoured by what I'd been hearing. He asked me where I'd feel more at home, in the EU or the UK? And I told him as a Scotsman I'd feel more at home in Scandinavia than I ever would in the fucking shires of England. And he laughed because they were nice people as I said, and drunk.

Anyway I think I had about 5 pints and a couple of shorts before my brother dragged me out to go and sleep in the rain so I probably shouldn't criticise given how much of their booze I drank.

Fucking idiots though.
