Morning A

A question for Anatoly, or anyone else who knows.

Members of the from Yorkshire family had a chess conundrum last night. We know you aren't allowed to castle out of check. But if it's your only option (i.e. otherwise it's checkmate) can you castle?

You can't castle out of check either.

But you *can* if the rook is attacked or (in the case of Q-side castling) has to pass through an attacked b1/b8 square.

Financial services employs 7.3% of the UK workforce and, the year before the Brexit vote, contributed a record £71.4bn in taxes, almost 12% of total government tax yield. This puts the Tories in a most awkward position. The party that is supposed to represent clear-sighted financial acumen must now put Brexit ideology before financial sense as far as popular messaging is concerned – while also desperately trying to implore bankers not to leave.

Hmm. 1.4 billion a week. 4 times more than Farage's 350 million a week.

Someone needs to start telling it how it is.

Farming subsidies? I'm ashamed to say that that piece of knowledge had, until now, passed me by. Unless my brain simply refused to assimilate it.

Food security and sustainability
Interesting section, this part
"In the early 1990s Britain’s self-sufficiency in food reached its highest in modern times. We were producing just over 70% of all the food we were eating. Since then the story has been one only of decline. We now produce 60% of our own food, but because of exports only around 50% of the food we eat is actually produced here."
I didn't realise domestic food growing and/or production was that high not long ago

"...[S]ocialism as practised in the War did no one any harm and quite a lot of people good. The children of this country have never been so well-fed or healthy. What milk there was was shared equally. The rich did not die because their meat ration was no larger than the poor, and there is no doubt that this common sharing and feeling of sacrifice was one of the strongest bonds that unified us. So, why, they say, cannot this common feeling of sacrifice be made to work as effectively in peace?”

PARIS (Reuters) - Britain risks losing clout in the aerospace industry, one of its largest skilled employers, due to concerns over its departure from the European Union, a corporate overhaul at Airbus and a new Franco-German push on defense, industry insiders say.

Initiatives from a new continental combat jet to a decision by Airbus (AIR.PA) to downgrade its UK representation, as well as the redeployment of some research projects, have left the $90-billion UK sector feeling increasingly sidelined.
I sense quagmire. Would welcome views on how this can work out because try as I might I can't see it.

New figures released by the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry have suggested that the exodus of EU workers from the capital as a result of Brexit may already have begun much earlier than anyone anticipated.
In a poll for the Chamber conducted by ComRes which surveyed over 500 of London’s businesses, nearly a third (31%) of businesses who employed EU workers said they had lost employees as a result of Brexit.
For larger businesses, that is those with ten or more staff, the impact was even more pronounced with 40% of those surveyed claiming that they had lost EU staff as a direct result of the Brexit vote.
