Let me just point out why Tubby's comment offends.

By comparing those who do not agree with his pov with those who opposed gay rights Tubby isn't calling me homophobic. He is however, equating my opposition to his approach with those who opposed gay rights. People were murdered, beaten, and imprisoned for standing up for the right to their sexuality. A basic human right that goes way beyond staying in the EU. IT is grotesquely offensive to compare moderate remainers (and indeed people who support brexit) with the murderers, queer bashers, and terrorists who opposed that basic human right.

You may dislike my style or approach (fair enough, although I never come here with an intent to offend) but such analogies need to be condemned vociferously.

A cricket story if I may...

Back in July 1977 we went on holiday to Somerset. I saw that they were playing a Gillette Cup match at Taunton so asked if I could go. So my mum and dad went into the town for the day and came in right near the end where a young player was hitting the bowling all round the ground.

"He'll play for England one day" says I
"Who is he?" asks my dad
"Ian Botham"....

Two weeks later...and now 40 years ago, he made his debut. Time just flies...

Top tip.

Never plug in an iron and leave on a carpet,thinking it won't get hot enough before I put it on the ironing board,then get diverted by a 'phone call and forget about.Though the strangely angled dresser to co er up the iron "impression" did prove a talking point,though not sure references to feng shui were wholly believed.

So, yeah, people who strongly stick up for the EU in the current climate do have perfectly rational fear of being murdered.

There's a case for arguing from within here too!

I wonder how younger versions of Greg Clark will be feeling when they look at this Tory mess. It's been said that the Tory mess under IDS made a load of people join the Lib Dems who'd have been Tories otherwise. That didn't end all that well for the Lib Dems though!

How many times has Greg Clark voted against the Tory whip whilst they have been in Government?

Did he vote for any of the Labour A50 amendments?

I only ask as it would help the 'soft' Remain side a lot if they actually started rebelling when it matters.....

Mind you there have been no substantive measures coming out of the negotiations so perhaps, until there is, it would be better not to criticise too much - perhaps that goes for the rapid criticism of Labour too

I'm surprised how grudging some people (not here) are being to John McCain today. Sure, he's basically a very rightwing guy who raises false hopes and doesn't follow through. I get that.

And I get that he could have shut the whole tawdry process down earlier in the week. But equally, "who can object to a debate?" probably has a fair bit of legs. I think the right thing to do was to allow that "debate" to happen, and vote it down. It feels much more of a knockback for the Republicans this way.

He'll probably vote for next time.

I do wish people who take offence at each other, for whatever reason, could take their arguments away to private messages or something. Perhaps one of the propellor heads could set up a 'Shutyourfaceyouslag' page elsewhere on the forum?

Anyway, it's gloriously sunny here in Saxony, on our way home from Poland. Brexit truly is barking.

I agree that Obamacare was the best they could do, and has things that need to be changed, but it might help if this is a better year.

In (comparative) fairness to Gove, he quickly cottoned on to the fact that Brexit would take time. He was happy with notice not being given till 2019 IIRC.

But Fox seems to have had an overdue epiphany.

Gove is actually among the best Brexiters at the moment.

The government has given up its two-year-long attempt to ban teachers caught up in the Trojan Horse affair in Birmingham, after those in the remaining cases were told disciplinary action against them has been halted.

Fifteen teachers and senior staff were accused of attempting to apply undue religious influence within a small group of schools in Birmingham after an anonymous letter made lurid accusations of an Islamist conspiracy to take over state schools.

But now letters from the National Council of Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) – an arm of the Department for Education – to lawyers for the remaining teachers involved have been told that proceedings have been discontinued.

The really astonishing bit is this:

Andrew Faux, a lawyer who defended several of the teachers before the NCTL, said: “The striking thing about the Park View cases was just how crude the prosecution was. It was left to the defence team to introduce basic documents setting out the law and guidance on collective worship and other educational matters.

“Witness after witness called on behalf of the department confirmed that they were not aware of the guidance and it had not informed their approach to the central question: were the schools too religious?”

Bunch of amateurs.
