house price growth hits four-year low
Breaking! UK house prices growth has hit a four-year low.
Halifax’s monthly survey, just released, shows that prices in the three months to July were only 2.1% higher than a year ago.
That’s the weakest annual rate since April 2013, down from a blistering 10% back in March 2016.
House prices in the last three months were 0.2% lower than in the previous three months (February-April). That’s the fourth quarterly fall in a row, and another sign that the economy is slowing.

Nobody seriously expects the UK not to settle its “divorce bill”, be it for £36bn, £60bn or whatever the European Union decides it wants, and now that Theresa May has “ruled out” paying it, there can be no more certain guarantee that it will be paid in full.

Re: Monday 7th August 2017
Afternoon all
Ah, the Venezuela situation arises
Well, my view on this is I don't think anyone here can be really sure what is going on there. What we do know is the US (as all the 'Great Powers' do) still interferes in the goings on in its immediate neighbours and has tried for years to undermine the current regime in Venezuela, including backing of coups and supporting the opposition with money and probably weapons. To think there is not a significant amount of that going on now would be naïve.
That is not to say that Maduro is actually a good leader and has not made a mess of the economy to a large extent and has reacted badly - which has given an opportunity for the propaganda to be turned against him
Personally, I think Corbyn is just doing what we would expect - he has an affiliation to the Venezuelans based on their attempts to reduce the inequality there - no mattered how flawed some of the methods had been - and I imagine there is contradictory evidence over who is behind all the violence. The people who have been calling for him to condemn the Venezuelans are only doing it to try and put him in a spot but if the Ireland stuff hasn't hurt him as much as we thought then this won't either. In reality his words will make no difference to the situation so it is all a bit of a storm in a teacup
I think it would be difficult to find any politician who does not make their statements and condemnations in an entirely consistent and usually demands from opponents for condemnations are to put people in a spot. Their are plenty of Governments around the world who behave in a similar manner but they are not so interesting politically
There are some cases that are more serious, however, where the UK supports regimes with arms sales - the noxious Government in Bahrain for example, or our great friends the Saudis among others. In this case the fact we sell arms and support the regime materially is far more important and in those cases a difference can be made by strong condemnation and withholding of weapons from them
Perhaps the press could concentrate on these types of countries rather than ones which our politicians have no influence over

Re: Monday 7th August 2017
So Venezuela is a bloody basket case now - poor economic conditions has led to the Government becoming repressive and very unpleasant - the issue though is that the opposition here are not the angelic protestors that we would sometimes be led to believe - they have been in the past probably are now being supported by the US......there is a lot of black propaganda going on here as well
It does not excuse the actions of the Venezuelan Government at all but why the focus on this one regime when we have seen oppression and violence by Governments all over the world
Why are we not supporting protestors in Saudi or Bahrain by not supplying their oppressors with weapons and training - that is a more relevant question that what Corbyn says about Venezuela.
Labour have a leader who talk us into a probably unjustifiable war whilst probably lying - we have tolerated the torture of people and abetted the secret rendition of prisoners
How much have British Governments known about US interference and support in the actions of right-wing Governments in the Central American region
These are things that are far more important than the fuss made about Corbyn - as I say above the calls are made to put him on the spot when politicians in the UK have, at best, tolerated much worse
These continual jibes are getting a bit tiring and, if the election is anything to go by, have no effect
