Wren-Lewis
"As I always try and stress, real GDP growth per head is not a good guide to real income growth if the price of imported goods rise or the price of UK goods sold overseas falls (what economists call a decline in the UK’s terms of trade).

Real wage growth in the UK has not been lousy because of lack of union power, immigrants or higher profits, but because economic growth (properly measured) has been stagnant, austerity included raising indirect taxes and we have now had two large depreciations in sterling."

The Bank of England has warned that the task of regulating the City after Brexit will put a strain on its ability to police the financial sector. Deputy governor Sam Woods also said the Bank’s regulatory arm, the Prudential Regulation Authority [PRA], faced “a material risk to its objectives” – which include promoting financial stability – as it deals with the UK’s exit from the EU.

Migrants and Housing

Understanding the impact of migration on housing is difficult, in part due to different definitions and statistics on migrants. However, there is general consensus that any impacts are complex and indirect.

About a fifth of migrants live in social rented accommodation, similar to the UK-born population. There is no evidence that social housing allocation favours migrants.

But – from an Irish perspective – this changes everything. Under article 50, it is indeed possible for the member state that is exiting to seek to extend the remit of the EU treaties beyond the stipulated two years.

This is what a transitional period would have to mean.

But – and here’s the rub – this can be done only with the unanimous consent of every other member state. In other words, Ireland has a veto.

We can now block the implementation of a transitional deal even if Germany and France and every other member state wants it to happen. The chaotic foolishness of the Brexiteers has, to coin a phrase, allowed us to take back control.
Theresa May took only 9 months for preparation before triggering article 50 when she could have taken longer and probably should have but, depressingly, not only did she not give herself much time, she doesn't even seem to have used the time she did have for any prep at all. Meanwhile, the rest of the EU seem to know exactly what they want and the best way to go about getting it.

So we differ on Corbyn's statement on Venezuela. Fair enough, we move on. But is it too much for us ask for a bit of control over the frontbench? This fool has popped up, fresh from undermining the Grenfell judge.
“It is perhaps understandable that Labour’s political enemies are using Venezuela’s difficulties to make mischief, but it is frustrating to see the dwindling band of New Labour neocons doing likewise. They conveniently ignore the history and the extreme violence of the right-wing opposition groups,” he wrote in the left-wing newspaper the Morning Star.
Nope, we're not "New Labour" or "neocons", Chris. We're mainstream Labour internationalists and institutionalists.

Don't know whether you've seen this but in his exchanges with Mary Beard, Taleb comes across as a bit of a knob.

And this...
I am certain that had I called Mary Beard “Professor Doctor Beard”, they would have found something else that was “chauvinist”, perhaps the length of my sentences, etc.

One enjoying biting the hand that used to feed him, and building a new phase of his media career. But he says some good stuff about Brexit.

I wish I were more confident, but I think Corbyn will choose the jobs and the energetic young Europhiles over nationalists (Bennites and, even worse, Caroline Flint). It might be a new Blue Labour party that gets started.

Yeah, I saw it a couple of days ago. Taleb was appalling, and had in the first place joined the discussion to back up Infowars idiot Paul Watson. I mean, if you even saw the rest of the BBC Roman cartoons you'd not think that "typical" Roman families were sub-Saharan black. I assume whoever put the "typical family" comment up was meaning the family were doing typical things. Beard, of course, never said typical and distanced herself. I might have drawn the man (based loosely on a real Algerian) a bit lighter, but so what?

I wasted hours on Nick Cohen's defence of Beard, talking to loons. I didn't get the obvious multiculturalist BBC plot. How does it work? "Let's slip this black guy into an obscure cartoon, but have Nigel Farage spouting rubbish unchallenged on prime time as camouflage?"

Given that the Conservatives gained 42 per cent of the voting electorate at the last election, and probably a higher proportion of BBC viewers and listeners who vote, I have a modest proposal. All broadcast comedy shows should have at least one Conservative comedian.
