This is the age of the administrative monarch. We are encouraged to place power and trust in individuals of purported unparalleled wisdom, vision and probity. Mayors, metro mayors, police commissioners, superheads; we outsource to individuals, increasing their power in the belief they will get things done, unencumbered by faint hearts and red tape.

By this thinking, democratic checks and balances are a bother. There can, in this political calibration, be some light-touch monitoring, but the monarch must have all the power. True democracy can be such a millstone.

I'm not sure about HS3 either.

HS2 is a project that's been put together over 8 years. HS3 seemed to spring fully formed from Osborne just before the 2015 election.

HS2 came about thus-

1) Is there another way of upgrading what we have?
2) Not really. So new line needed.
3) Might as well be high speed.

I don't know if 1 has been looked at properly. Could for instance a 125mph line with very few stops from Liverpool to Hull be built around what we have? More like Cardiff-Bristol- Swindon- Reading- London?

I've no argument at all with more rail spending in the North. IPPR North came up with a figure of £6bn per year underfunding of the North. Let's chop a bit off as Brexit tax, and go with £5bn, and see what can be done.

State Pension is an earnings replacement benefit of course,though maybe not wise to say that too much,they may decide to time limit,make loan recoup later in more broader terms than targeted.
