The numbers did shock me to be honest (almost as much as Ireland's did) - I would take the numbers as +-20% to be honest but even then I think the UK numbers will still be about right as the spending was from 2016 but the passenger figures from 2014 and I think numbers have been rising since then so make the subsidy even lower
Yes, the numbers have been rising spectacularly. I don't know if it was widely foreseen, and even with better funding, it would still be very hard to keep up. If rail became pleasant, as it often isn't, God knows how many might use it.

Moving medium to long distances.......and to be honest even short ones too in the UK is a horrible experience in most of my experience

There really needs to be a strategic review of mass transport of people and how sustainable it is over the medium to long term and what infrastructure we need to support it....at some point it will all grind to halt and people will spend more and more time in unproductive travel to work

It is an unenviable, but necessary task......and public transport will be at the heart of it - I see the car as it exists now (environmentally damaging to make but idle 90% of the time) as being obsolete in 30 years

Mind you if I look back at Tomorrow's World from the 80s, we should all be wearing jetpacks now!

The Infrastructure Commission looks like it could make some improvements to strategy.

Labour had the Strategic Rail Authority for a while, which doesn't seem to have been a success. There is a book on the period specifically, which I'll read one day.

The UK does not seem to give many subsidies to many things, have many nationalised industries to suck up loads of cash, be overly generous in health or education spending.....be extra generous do those needing state support so my question is

where does all the bloody money go?
Rent-seeking activity
It's why UK productivity figures are piss-poor

Jo Maugham QC‏Verified account @JolyonMaugham 15h
Really grim. Rail/road speeds in North half that in South East. Per head transport spending in London 500% of North.
I think that's a good way of comparing different areas. Interesting idea for a political campaign.

Unfortunately the levitating wheelchair which many train passengers assume is still in the development stage,I have offered various weaponery/snow plough enablements to suitably move people/objects out of the way,of course with an appropriate warning,as a suggestion.

Despite confirmation of what I already know, indeed not even remotely contestable and beyond political allegiance, tribal or otherwise,it doesn't make me any less upset at both regression but equally undermining in possibly fatal ways the best way forward.

@willow re housing support for sick/disabled homeowners, this is where I argue the exact opposite of the benefit=dependency line.It facillitates independence subject to particular circumstance,DLA/PIP for extra costs, this should not be used for housing costs, why discriminate on type of housing, unless you have an intention, hence my "clear",description.Society "agreed" that deincarceration/deinstitutionalism and self/care if possible is best in own home with the most control/choice over, further that you shouldn't be charged for health care,I argue that despite the cover of discretion in effect with the bedroom tax and this, this is exactly what is being done under blind ideology, before you get to the very grey areas of what is social or health care.

They knee jerk/apply policy to certain benefits as "problematic",they are incredibly stupid, suspect if it was called something else or additional to deemed extra cost allowance eg.they would treat it differently.
