Morning all. Usual Saturday morning activities and add doing the washing. Thoroughly domesticated me...

Nick Gibb is speaking at ResearchEd which looks to promote the use of evidence and research in teaching...and has come out with some claims that have either been refuted already (on the effectiveness of pupil premium) or can't be proven.

I did point out that politicians aren't bound by such things as evidence...

Contrary to appearances, he's not stupid. His business activities and possible conflicts of interests have already been raked over in the local press, painting an unflattering picture. He will be well aware that a leadership bid would expose him to much higher levels of national scrutiny and the rather mercenary way in which he makes his money (investing in fracking and tobacco in emerging (for which read 'poorly regulated') markets) would become much more common knowledge. I suspect what he wants is 'behind the scenes' influence. He wants a key committee position.

Labour a nose ahead of National on the averages

The latest averages translate into: Labour, 51 seats; National, 51; Green, seven; and New Zealand First, 10.

The Māori Party scored slightly less than 1.2%, giving them one seat, though very close to two, assuming it wins an electorate.

ACT has continued its slide to 0.3%. Assuming National voters keep ACT leader David Seymour in Epsom, the party would get one seat, and it would be an overhang.

"Tories plot to slash student loan rates in attempt to court young voters

Announcements could come within weeks as the Tories try to broaden their appeal at next month’s party conference and the autumn Budget.

Young voters abandoned the Conservatives in their droves at the June general election, after Jeremy Corbyn promised to scrap tuition fees.

One plan being considered is to change the formula through which many graduates pay interest rates of more than 6 per cent – about double the rate of inflation.

A source who has discussed the plans with Number 10 said the idea was “pretty high up as a main option” for decreasing the burden of student debt.

Another idea would involve universities that charge high fees but fail to improve student earning potential
being named and shamed."
