I'd like to know whose idea the Florence thing was. It doesn't strike me as the sort of thing that Theresa May herself would come up with. I expect we'll only find out when he or she has to spend more time with their family.

I'll leave the specifics to AK but Chesterfield constituency and Council were both Libdem for a number of years until relatively recently.

The impression you get is that the firm saw its relationship with TfL as entirely one-way: we deliver cabs, you say thank you. That’s all very well for 4,000 word manifestos posted on Medium by the sort of tech bro who read Ayn Rand at too formative an age, it isn’t actually a workable transport policy for the real world.

I think you've misunderstood Uber's true character. I saw an interview earlier in which their spokesman expressed great concern for their cab drivers and "their loved ones". I was in tears . . .

The key question is whether the UK will have the ability to diverge in regulatory terms from the EU? Will we be able to say no to certain EU directives and regulations, even if we choose to apply others?

I don't understand why other people don't understand this. Whatever we want to export to the EU will have to comply with EU regulations, so the question actually is, do we want to go on exporting to the EU?

An interesting question is why our contemporary 'merchant societies' aren't involved in political unrest, apart from the few mouthy brexiteers.

In his HuffPost UK daily briefing Paul Waugh suggests having a two-year Brexit transition could have implications for the timing of Theresa May’s own exit. He says:

May’s allies think she has proved she is quietly effective on policy substance (her speech hasn’t changed much at all through the week), while Boris has been loudly ineffective. On the politics, rather than policy, Boris has undoubtedly reminded everyone of his role. But some around May think the two-year transition is also a way of extending her own political lifetime, letting her oversee the process with a handover to a new leader in early 2021. That would allow enough time for her successor to prepare for a general election in 2022, while giving the ‘next generation’ of possible Tory leaders time to build their profile.

The level of delusion in this is quite staggering.
