How are things? (Please feel free to ignore this if you wish.)
Things are fine thanks - wife is getting used to being at home and spending most of the time just doing not very much (which is not like her at all).

We both know there's a long way to go but we'll get there.

NB good drying weather today - two lots of washing done and dried outside ready for my ironing session on Sunday afternoon.
If I'm not here, then I'll be in the library. Or the other library.

Three local council byelections this week, and a bit of a departure from recent trends:

Waveney DC - Tory hold with almost precisely half the vote, a double figure increase in a ward which has always voted for them since two Tories were returned in the all out 2002 elections, though Labour were fairly close then and again in the most recent 2015 election when one Tory ran well ahead of their running mate (this council went to regular all out elections in 2011 after a lengthy period of electing by thirds) This area saw one of Labour's most disappointing results in this year's GE and so a significant pro-Tory swing this time did not surprise, though Labour at least managed to boost their own share by about 5 points. UKIP were a close third two years ago (and took a seat in the double member Suffolk CC division here back in 2013) but their vote more than halved to barely 10% now. LibDems last with 5% after sitting the last contest out.

Chesterfield DC - LibDem gain from Labour with precisely one vote under 50% and a swing of around 15% since the last contest here in 2015. This did not come totally out of the blue, however - LibDems took both seats in this ward easily in 2003 and 2007 before losing them to Labour in 2011, and last time they fell further behind. The result this year in the Derbyshire CC division covering this area saw them run Labour quite close, however maybe another pointer in retrospect. Labour still polled over 40% themselves though, and the LibDem triumph was at least as much about cleaning up the anti-Labour vote - the Tory score of 6% was less than half of what they had polled here two years ago in their first electoral outing this century whilst the rather extravagantly titled "Chesterfield and North Derbyshire Independents" (with a former LibDem councillor as candidate) amassed a somewhat embarrassing 1.4%.

Oadby and Wigston DC - LibDem gain from Labour, removing the latter's sole representation on this council after the 2015 election had seen the first Labour councillor elected on it since the 1970s. Thar maybe does not tell the whole story, however - whilst this ward split 1Lib/1Lab two years ago the former clearly topped the poll and the result this time showed little change from then (a minimal movement either way, depending on which calculation for multi-member seats you use) This had been a safe LibDem fiefdom in both 2003 and 2007, but the Tories ran them close in a previous 2008 by-election and remained competitive in subsequent elections finishing close third last time - they slipped back somewhat now however. Despite this setback Labour seem to be on a long term upward trend here - there was still a significant swing to them compared to the 2011 result - and their return to this authority may not be too long delayed.

Another bumper week to end the month - twelve contests. Again, I may take a while to produce my round up......

Q. As you said, 600,000 Italians now live in the UK. You said that you want them to remain. What is going to change for them – I guess something is going to change?
A. (the Prime Minister). We set out that for those EU citizens currently living in the UK who have made the UK their home, including those 600, 000 Italians who are in the UK, we want them to be able to stay and to have the same rights as they have at the moment.
That is unequivocal. The same rights they have now. Now, of course, the Prime Minister’s statement is technically untrue – the UK has set out no such thing.

But that’s not really the point, because what matters is not what we’ve said so far, but what we do next – and in particular, what David Davis and Ollie Robbins, our lead representatives, say at the negotiations next week. Monsieur Barnier has already signalled very clearly in his response to the speech that he expects them to make good on the Prime Minister’s promise.

So do they say that the Prime Minister didn’t really mean it, or didn’t understand what she was saying, and that the UK’s position remains unchanged – we have no intention of giving EU citizens “the same rights as they have at the moment”? In that case, why on earth should anyone in the rest of the EU27 take anything she, or the UK government says, seriously? Such a course would be deeply damaging to the Prime Minister’s credibility (especially in Italy, where her comments have been widely, and accurately, reported). Or do they, belatedly, do the right thing, and change the UK’s approach - a course of action which would generate a huge amount of goodwill? Three million EU citizens here and a million Britons elsewhere in the EU are waiting to hear.

Germany faces first far-right party in parliament since second world war
Alternative für Deutschland could become main opposition group if Merkel keeps her coalition together, bringing raft of entitlements to populist party

According to polls by respected institutes INSA and Enmid on Friday, Merkel’s CDU/CSU alliance was on between 34% to 36% and the SPD on between 21% and 22%. Die Linke was polling at between 10% and 11%, the pro-business Liberal Democrats on 9% and the Greens had crept up to 8%.

The results would pave the way for the continuation of a grand coalition between the CDU/CSU and the SPD or a so-called Jamaica Coalition between Merkel’s conservatives and the FDP and Greens, never before seen on the national stage.

One of the highest number of posts this year for a single day, certainly if you discount post election(s).Hopes of our demise unfortunately misguided. It depended on enough people not going into the self fulfilling death spiral, which there were and of course "regular features" eg.Roger's schools,AK roundup etc.Now having said that there will be about ten posts over the weekend, especially if PF overdoes it on the gin, which she is prone to do.

Sadly there are too many schools who say "We don't think our school will be right for your child" and force them to go elsewhere.

One of my friends has a daughter who has Downs and she was asked by an Inclusion Manager what her daughter's problem was...
I replied I'd rather tell her about my wonderful little girl than list her "problems".....
She said "yes, I've worked with lots of Down syndromes".
Down syndromes. Not children or individuals who have Ds. Just simply Down syndromes. Grouped together as one, defined entirely by a diagnosis.

If you wanted to submit ideas etc towards the budget for this year you are now too late.FWIW I quite often submit to consultations etc,not because I think for a nanosecond it will have any influence but on using all available ways no matter how fruitless. However, being slightly paranoid I now fear that my representation to the DWP and outlining as to why the removal of the ability to work and receive housing support for homeowners meant some people would be better off not working(though not expected to) and that their oft repeated public pronouncement was untrue, led to them turning it into an interest bearing loan with charges(rather than two years receivership before that was the case) in all situations.Sometimes you get generalised thanks but on one occasion I got a rather snotty reply when I gave my opinion on the benefit hotspot hit squad thing,I think they took my colourful description of trawling through targeted neighbourhoods, raking through bins and beds vigilantism as personal.
