Theresa May's Tory party speech in Florence
an inappropriate venue, time and place
arrogant, rude and expensive (not just monetarily)

LDem gain from Lab in multi-member ward.
Ah, there have been a few like that recently ;)

Split ward, Labour took the second seat last time but overall the LibDems topped the poll.
Oh I see.

I've just read more and apparently he was the first Labour councillor there almost in living memory and then ended up mired in controversy.

I'd like to know whose idea the Florence thing was. It doesn't strike me as the sort of thing that Theresa May herself would come up with. I expect we'll only find out when he or she has to spend more time with their family.

I'll leave the specifics to AK but Chesterfield constituency and Council were both Libdem for a number of years until relatively recently.

I did like this bit...

http://www.citymetric.com/transport/tfl ... why-s-good" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
This reads a lot like Uber was not only being unhelpful to the authorities, but was actively obstructing them. The impression you get is that the firm saw its relationship with TfL as entirely one-way: we deliver cabs, you say thank you. That’s all very well for 4,000 word manifestos posted on Medium by the sort of tech bro who read Ayn Rand at too formative an age, it isn’t actually a workable transport policy for the real world.
:D

Uber. Beloved by the kind of people who have 'libertarian' in their twitter biog and who didn't actually give a shit about the drivers' employment rights before today...

"The Calendars of Patent and Close Rolls contain very little of importance relative to the dealings of the merchants of the Society of the Peruzzi of Florence with Edward III prior to the year 1336. Though they were undoubtedly trading in the country, they do not appear to have been very closely associated with the affairs of the Court.

In 1330 they were acting in concert with the Bardi, as attorneys for the Count of Julich, receiving for him the pension allowed him by Edward III. In 1333, licence was granted to...the Society of the Peruzzi dwelling in England, to take certain of their wools to the staples appointed, and to export them...

Privileges of this kind, also accorded to the Bardi, may be taken as evidence that the Peruzzi were doing considerable private trade. They dealt extensively in wool with the various religious houses - as did the Bardi and others also-and they also cultivated business relations with the nobility...

The Peruzzi family was of considerable importance in Florence.... Bonifazio di Tommaso Peruzzi, who, compelled to leave Florence and visit London in 1339, when the affairs of the company became precarious, died there in 1340, "perchance," says Peruzzi, "from grief, foreseeing the impending catastrophe to his family, and to Florence"...."

Just for this quote, really.
The key question is whether the UK will have the ability to diverge in regulatory terms from the EU? Will we be able to say no to certain EU directives and regulations, even if we choose to apply others?
I don't understand why other people don't understand this. Whatever we want to export to the EU will have to comply with EU regulations, so the question actually is, do we want to go on exporting to the EU?

An interesting question is why our contemporary 'merchant societies' aren't involved in political unrest, apart from the few mouthy brexiteers.
Do they still believe it won't happen?

In his HuffPost UK daily briefing Paul Waugh suggests having a two-year Brexit transition could have implications for the timing of Theresa May’s own exit. He says:

May’s allies think she has proved she is quietly effective on policy substance (her speech hasn’t changed much at all through the week), while Boris has been loudly ineffective. On the politics, rather than policy, Boris has undoubtedly reminded everyone of his role. But some around May think the two-year transition is also a way of extending her own political lifetime, letting her oversee the process with a handover to a new leader in early 2021. That would allow enough time for her successor to prepare for a general election in 2022, while giving the ‘next generation’ of possible Tory leaders time to build their profile.
The level of delusion in this is quite staggering.

The venue is actually this -

@JoeMurphyLondon

BBC reports that Mrs May is not speaking in the lovely Florentine church at all, but a disused police barracks. Nothing to read into that

Well, she should at least feel at home there (if she pretends it's a disused police station).
Perhaps she could advise them on who best to flog it to.
