Boris Johnson caught on camera reciting Kipling in Myanmar temple

Foreign secretary’s impromptu recital of colonial-era poem was so embarrassing the UK ambassador was forced to stop him

The previously unbroadcast footage shows the diplomat managing to halt Johnson before he could get to the line about a “Bloomin’ idol made o’ mud/ Wot they called the Great Gawd Budd” – a reference to the Buddha. (Guardian)

We had Gordon Brown who was hated but I quite admired (I also have low levels of popularity in my daily working envt so perhaps it was empathy). Then we had the US bankers-induced crash and Gordon Brown was at least taken quite seriously. Then we somewhat recovered and were cosmopolitan ass-kicking London 2012. And now to Europe at least we are a comedy nation - but not affectionate comedy, just self important, xenophobic and useless comedy.

There are rumours (according to the Times - which I can't link to as it's a photo-shot thing on the BBC News website) that the Conservative Party Conference preparations are "in chaos".

Brexit: Number of British people applying to live in other EU countries surges

The number of Britons who have applied for citizenship in other EU nations since the Brexit referendum last year has soared by tens of thousands – and almost trebled in Ireland.

Elsewhere, the requests doubled in Spain, Sweden, Denmark and Poland – and there was a sharp rise in France, figures showed.

Electoral Commission urged to reconsider view on Vote Leave spending
Watchdog faces possible judicial review over decision to close investigation into £625,000 for digital marketing firm
Rather timid article from the Guardian, seems to be missing the juicy bits. This explanation from CrowdJustice gives a better sense of why some people are so angry about this:

https://www.crowdjustice.com/case/did-v ... ng-limits/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
1) In February 2016, Steve Baker MP, lobbying for Vote Leave to be designated as the official leave campaign, sent a round robin email asking recipients to support Vote Leave because it claimed to have found a loophole in the spending rules. Here is what he said:

"It is open to the Vote Leave family to create separate legal entities each of which could spend £700k: Vote Leave will be able to spend as much money as is necessary to win the referendum";

I think we can safely say, unlike in the Tory incident, if what they did proves to have broken the rules the excuse of it being accidental is pretty much out the window.

WHat an utter farce the Tories are

Matthew Parris v good

and they now have fewer members than the Lib Dems

Their' "big idea" is to increase help to buy: each party trying to out-dumb the other on housing. IDS, Liam Fox, Reese-Mogg. FFS.

What a car crash UK politics is.

And the evidence from June that a very high *and active* membership can make a difference.

Its true that the SNP had significant losses despite their recent surge in numbers, but leaked internal stuff post-GE claimed it was largely passive (in contrast to 2 years ago)

That seems to me to be very doubtful with little evidence to support it. The kind of things activists want to believe as they don't like to feel they're wasting their time. Looking at other countries (eg the US) and past UK history, I don't think the evidence supports you.

(I say that as someone who has spent hundreds of hours campaigning for Labour knocking on doors. Not of course something I'll be doing again.)

There have been academic studies backing up the idea that activism can make a significant difference, but by all means continue in your comfort zone ;)

Actually, the 1997 GE is also evidence that it does - Blair boasted of Labour's high membership (over 400k) at the time too. That was before he - and you - decided it didn't matter, though.

Twitter has had a great deal of fun with this moronic statement. What I want to know is who bails us out when we hit that "Grand Designs" moment of a semi-completed, uninhabitable, unmortgageable house and all our money/credit has run out? Usually it's the bank of mum and dad. On one occasion the bank of embarrassed but loving son. Who will the UK turn to? Our colonial offspring? Cap in hand to Australia for a bridging loan? Meanwhile the UK population is stuck in the equivalent of an on site caravan remembering the modest home they used to live in and wondering whatever possessed them to give it up for this never-ending living hell!
