Morning all. Full house at home as both kids are around - very unusual occurrence these days.

Did we see this last night?

This is Deal or No Deal, Tory style. The prize is a cliff-edge Brexit

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfr ... dge-brexit
Why is the government refusing to publish its Brexit impact assessments? Is it because of spoilers? Guys, it’s not The effing Sixth Sense: in this case, people might prefer to know if they were actually done for all along.

Then again, we have to consider the possibility that they’re keeping these forecasts secret so as not to dilute the euphoria that awaits once we reach the land of milk and innovative British jams. Or maybe, to adapt Boris Johnson’s phrase, the post-Brexit uplands are simply too sunlit. Maybe backstage they’re desperately scrambling for instruments to manage the coming boom.
:D
If I'm not here, then I'll be in the library. Or the other library.

Eight local council byelections this week:

Wyre DC - Labour hold with almost exactly half the vote, an increase of 12% on two years ago. This ward has returned 3 Labour councillors in each election since 2003, though only in that election was it totally one-sided; the Tories have been competitive since and Labour's winning margin of 15% is the biggest for that 14 years. UKIP polled a strong third in 2015 but did not stand now, in their absence an Independent candidate took the remainder of the vote, up from the Indy showing last time. A personal thing I have just discovered - that person was the same one who has been my Cumbria CC representative (as a Tory) from 2013-17. Small world, eh?

Tamworth DC - Labour hold in a straight fight with the Tories, though their winning score of some 54% made it a close result in this ward compared with most recent elections - this ward has voted Labour in every election since the 2002 all-outs saw 3 members safely returned - the interesting exception being a small pro-Labour swing since 2015, which was of course the same day as a GE which saw them win a landslide in this once Labour seat (an outcome repeated this June) Both then and last year, UKIP polled a significant vote - they finished only just behind the Tories in 2016 and it is clear much of their erstwhile support still prefers the blue team.

Warrington - Labour hold in a ward which returned 3 Labour members in post boundary change all-out elections last year, with an increase of nearly 10 points to comfortably over half the vote. LibDems had been competitive, and occasionally victorious, in the (larger) predecessor ward - but they were well beaten last year and now slipped to third behind the Tories, who enjoyed a modest increase themselves. UKIP lost over half their 2016 support and dropped to 5%, Greens dropped by two thirds in finishing last with 2.5%.

Wakefield - Labour hold with just over half the vote, compared to a little under last year. Whilst the Tories only actually won this ward at Labour's recent low point in 2008, they have been competitive at other times - just missing out getting a seat by a handful of votes in the original 2004 all-out elections - and they improved from 2016's defeat by nearly 2 to 1 to advance significantly to over 30%. As often recently, this was in large part due to UKIP's collapse - losing over three quarters of their support from their strong third place a year ago to just 5% now, placing them not just behind the LibDems (who improved slightly) but the pro-devolution Yorkshire Party in their first outing here.

Three Rivers DC - LibDem gain from Tory despite there being a pro-Tory swing here since last year, this is explainable from this particular seat being fought in 2015 when the Tories took advantage of their GE win to win several normally LibDem wards in what remains one of their relatively few council strongholds even after the electoral ravages of the last few years. Since then, normal service has very much been resumed - the LibDems regained their overall majority last year and a couple of byelections, this one being the latest, have augmented it since. This ward was actually a remarkably close 4-way marginal in the 2014 all-out elections, splitting 2LD/1Con with Labour (who used to win in part of this ward under the old boundaries) and UKIP not far behind. This time the LibDems got just over 40%, but that was still enough for a comfortable win as the Tories were almost caught by Labour who improved by 9 points to over a quarter of the vote. UKIP's collapse here from the heights of 2014 here is now pretty complete, their 2% only just beating the Greens in the latter's first outing in these parts for a while.

Ashfield DC - a decisive gain for the localist Ashfield Independents from the Tories in a ward that split 2Con/1Lab two years ago, the first election here since boundary changes (the smaller two member predecessor ward had returned 2 Indies in 2003 and 2 Labour in 2011, splitting 1Con/1Lab in between) The winner was a previous Labour councillor who had taken just 10% for a previous localist slate in 2015, but there was a remarkable 40-point increase to over half the vote now. Labour came a distant second, but falling only by about half as much as the Tories meant they finished ahead of them this time - whilst UKIP collapsed totally from over 20% then to barely 2% now. They still just beat the LibDems, though.

Sheffield - Labour hold with just under half the vote, up 6 points since last year. This ward has returned Labour members ever since it returned 3 Labour members in the 2004 all-out elections, and it duly did so again (with slightly different boundaries) in last years all outs. It is fairly unusual in Sheffield, however, in rarely having LibDems as Labour's main challengers - only in 2010 did they finish second here, before then and in 2011 the Tories took runners up spot (though never getting really close) and from 2012 the mantle was taken up by UKIP - again, without them ever seriously threatening Labour. It may be notable, therefore, that this time the LibDems increased by over 20 points to exceed a quarter of the vote - going from a poor 4th in 2016 to a decent second now. Tories fell back slightly whilst UKIP - again - collapsed, by over 20 points to just 6%. Greens also down a bit as they came last with 2%.

Aberdeenshire - Tory hold with close to half the vote in a division which split 1Con/1Nat/1Ind/1LD earlier this year, though the Tories and SNP finished well ahead of the rest on first preferences and failed to get more councillors because of only fielding one candidate (Tory) or poor vote splitting (SNP) In 2007 this division voted 2LD/1Nat/1Con and in 2012 2Nat/1LD/1Con, showing a long term LibDem decline which was confirmed when they lost their seat to the Tories in a previous 2016 by-election, only just winning in back this May. Helped by the absence of Independents this time Tories saw a 12 point increase since then whilst the SNP also went up by 6 points to almost exactly a third of the vote. LibDems continued their decline and fall, only just finishing ahead of Labour who nearly doubled their share to 8%. Greens last with less than 2%

For the third time in a row, eight contests next week - though it would be nine but for an unopposed Tory return.

Don't think its as simple as that I'm afraid. Not least because "leave" could never have won if lots of people weren't ALREADY deeply racist.

(which isn't saying that was the sole motivator behind people backing Brexit either)

It is, it can certainly be argued the seemingly impressive vote share the Tories got in June overlies some very chronic long term weaknesses.

To simplify, they are terribly reliant on older voters and declining sectors of the electorate (not least, people who regularly buy papers)

It is, it can certainly be argued the seemingly impressive vote share the Tories got in June overlies some very chronic long term weaknesses.

To simplify, they are terribly reliant on older voters and declining sectors of the electorate (not least, people who regularly buy papers)

The Tories are astonishingly hopeless.

Fox hunting.

Grammar schools.

Something to do with killing elephants?

What was their offer.

Labour's proposals were silly, regressive, and unrealistic, but it least they offered something.

Hi.

Remember when Michael White was just an old fuddy-duddy, politically out of touch but essentially harmless?

He is now showing himself (on Twitter) to be a genuinely nasty POS. Worth looking at an exchange between him and a Liverpudlian today. To sum up: he's happy to roll around in the gutter with the likes of Boris Johnson and Bernard Ingham.
