But she has to find a replacement less sleazy than Fallon - from among Tory MPs. Quite a challenge.

I was surprised to see someone comment that Fallon's career was over, sadly DFDS Liam Fox's wasn't.
Whatever Fallon's indiscretions were, I'd be very surprised if they achieve Fox's level of corruption.

There was only Hammond in between, I hadn't realised that until now.

Morning.

This is a possible example of what I was talking about yesterday. The difference between Bex Bailey coming forward to talk about her experiences in order to try to shine a light on the problems that women face within politics in order try to make things better for future generations and this Tory list. The author of the list is obscure. The motives of the list leaker is obscure. There are real question marks around the veracity of the list. And innocent parties mentioned on the list do not appear to have been consulted. This list, in other words, isn't necessarily about furthering women's rights. It may have positive consequences for women's rights, but I am very wary about its origins and the intent of those wielding it.

The news outlets seem now to be focusing on the interest rate rise. Makes me think that the resignation was deliberately timed with this in mind. Gavin Williamson's doing, then.

Anyway -

This Gavin Williamson keeping a tarantula in his office lark. Surely that's not normal workplace behaviour. I'd say it was probably designed to intimidate people in a James Bond villain delusion sort of way. I like spiders, but I can imagine the effect being in a room with a tarantula would have on a lot of people. Rather nasty and intimidating behaviour. I thought things were meant to be going to change for the better?

I suspect it's one of those things where it would never ever be allowed in any way at all anywhere else but the commons is, literally, a law unto itself for members and can make its own rules - the appeal courts ruled on this about licensing hours years ago.

Yes - but surely in this new spirit of non-harrassment he should be asked to\volunteer to desist? It is rather overtly unacceptable workplace behaviour.

The interest rate rise is a big story though, effectively BoE saying 1.5% GDP growth is the new normal so more than that is inflationary, that's scary stuff.

Saying the labour market is tight makes Carney look like an idiot.

'Big void' identified in Khufu's Great Pyramid at Giza

Japanese and French scientists made the announcement after two years of study at the famous pyramid complex.

They have been using a technique called muography, which can sense density changes inside large rock structures.

Muography makes use of the shower of high-energy particles that rain down on the Earth's surface from space.

When super-fast comic[sic] rays collide with air molecules, they produce a range of "daughter" particles, including muons. (BBC News website, my emphasis)
This is an interesting, non-political article but the above quote did amuse me.

Afternoon all.

I see there is some general cheering by the right about Esther McVey being appointed to be Deputy Chief Whip as, apparently, she is loathed by the left.

I would have said this was a good move since whips are generally not seen or heard by anyone outside the Commons - who had heard of Gavin Williamson before today for example?

And this...
