Consensus now is that the Tories were governing, sometimes controversially but broadly effectively, when Brexit came along and capsized everything. This is mistaken: the referendum could only have been called, and the leave campaign only fought, by politicians with a fundamental lack of seriousness, a puerile indifference to the outcome of their decisions.

Long before it gambled with our future prosperity and place in the world, the Conservative party was shooting craps with the lives of its own people.

People have been diagnosed with Victorian ailments including rickets and TB in one of the wealthiest parts of London, a shocking new report on inequality has revealed.

The gap between rich and poor in health, housing, education and income in the Grenfell fire-hit borough of Kensington and Chelsea has been laid bare in the report, compiled by Labour’s Emma Dent Coad.

The Kensington MP has compiled the report in the wake of the fatal tower block blaze to unmask the yawning gap between rich and poor in the area.
This is really good from Emma Dent Coad. It highlights inequality and the problems it creates, rather than focusing on the narrower issue of fire safety failures at Grenfell. The Tories are trying to create a narrative that only "absolute poverty" is meaningful. That how conditions compare to the poorest parts of the world is more important than the gap between the poorest and the richest of those that live side by side. All the evidence suggests they are wrong. There is evidence that high inequality leads to poorer health outcomes, for the richest as well as the poorest. There is also evidence that living on the bottom rung of an unequal society, however rich or poor overall, creates a great deal of stress, that more equal societies are better for mental wellbeing. Closing the equality gap is something everyone on the left agree on but unfortunately those in the media and many in the wider public still seem to need constant reminding that civilised societies that are pleasant societies for everyone to live in are societies that leave no one behind.

This article makes some interesting points about the current housing crisis, especially about the impact of the reduction in social housing and the disparity in incomes between younger and older people:

https://medium.com/@ian.mulheirn/parrot ... 9b36a72e52" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
People parroting ‘supply and demand’ to explain the ills of the housing market is precisely the problem in the housing debate: which demand? Which price? It’s vital we use the right price measures to avoid drawing the wrong policy conclusions.

PA employers will not be exempt from further HMRC action on minimum wage

“The government will work with local authorities to provide appropriate support on a case by case basis and intends to carefully monitor any additional local authority spending as a result of supporting individuals and the effect on local authority finances.”

But he had not been able to clarify whether HMRC believed local authorities who funded direct payments could now be responsible for meeting the sleep-in shift NMW arrears of individual PA employers.

Sue Bott (, deputy chief executive of Disability Rights UK, has warned that some disabled people are now having to cut back on their day-time support in order to be able to pay NMW rates during the night.

She said: “Although employers will have longer to deal with any underpayment of sleep-ins, the government announcement fails to get to the heart of the problem.

“Of course, PAs and other social care staff should be paid the proper rate for the job, but a direct payment must be sufficient to cover the costs.

“Unfortunately, what we are seeing is that people are having to reduce the support they have in the day to pay for support at night.

“The hole in social care funding just gets deeper every day with disabled people and older people having to pay the price through lack of essential support

"An HMRC spokesman told DNS this week that his department was not able to say how many individual PA employers were being investigated for non-payment of sleep-in NMW arrears."

Of course this situation benefits those people who own spare land, more than one property, live somewhere which gives them scope to "downsize" or are in line to inherit something (especially when the beneficiary already owns their own place at the time of inheritance).

The rich get rich and the poor get poorer . . .

Richard Ratcliffe is calling for his wife to be offered diplomatic protection, and the Foreign Office is considering this option. That is not the same as her being offered diplomatic status, as I wrongly said earlier. I’ve amended the earlier posts to make that clear. (Andrew Sparrow, Politics Live, Guardian)
