I think we can all take pleasure in the downfall of Stephen "managed migration" Kinnock. Delicious skewering

He is another one trapped in his job. I bet if he could find something else to do he'd quit.

I fear that S Kinnock is more proof of the general rule that the offspring of famous pols who go into that game rarely match their parents.

(and yes I still rate Neil despite his flaws, and always liked Glenys)

More so than even his reaction to the exit poll, that passage afterwards when his wife (who has genuine political acumen) had to tell him what to say was genuinely excruciating.

As far as SH's concluding comment goes, it might be worth remembering that Kinnock Jnr was only selected by a single vote prior to the 2015 GE.......

There must be lots of them. Ambitious people who know that they're going nowhere fast under Corbyn. The party needs a good clear out of its current MPs as the pool from whihc Corbyn can appoint is tiny, meaning there is no talent on the frontbench. That needs to be addressed quickly as Corbyn and McDonnell are not getting any younger, though the former is amazing for his age and looks like he has a decade plus left in him.

It depends, I think some could get back onto the front bench if they were prepared to grovel a wee bit (going back to the doc, I would put Powell in that category perhaps)

But those who burnt their bridges not just with Corbyn, but any sort of significant change in Labour from late period Blair, might be better off looking elsewhere.

On this, it appears we agree ;)

(also worth remembering that the leadership's personnel problem will ease in a year or two, when promoting the 2017 intake - more left leaning - becomes feasible)

I don't think any amount of grovelling would work. This is the Campaign group.

Not sure about the latter point either. The Corbynite/useless Annaliese Dodds s shadow treasury minister, and she is from 2017.

You've long been predicting the return of the rebels. With the exception of Owen Smith to NI, which is Milne's little joke, there have been none.

They need to go. Able people like Cooper are wasting their lives.

Cooper had her chance. I reluctantly voted for her in the leadership, but her campaign was woeful. She's clearly not as able as she can sometimes appear.

Blimey - that was a long one! But a good read, for all that. Why are people (the electorate) so gullible? Or happy to have their less charitable motives given validation? Do they genuinely think that nothing bad could ever happen to them? Is thinking it some sort of talisman to ward off the evil eye?

Don't tell him, Pike . . .

Dodds was previously an MEP, that's why she got a front bench job right away. Nobody else from that intake did. But they will.

Government backs down over EU human rights to avoid risk of defeat
Tories agree to work with rebel MP Dominic Grieve over keeping rights under EU law after Brexit
...the solicitor general, Robert Buckland, said the government was willing to work with Grieve to see how rights under the charter could be kept after Brexit, and would introduce its own amendment to this effect later in the bill’s passage.

Grieve said this was sufficient reassurance for him and that he would not press for a vote on his amendments.

Ken Clarke, another leading Conservative Brexit rebel, refused to guarantee he would not press for a vote on one amendment, which would allow Britons to mount legal challenges under the charter after Brexit, to which he was the second signatory after Grieve,

However, with Grieve backing away, the chances of a government defeat were notably lessened if a vote was called.
What does this mean, please?

Speaking earlier in the debate, Grieve said the government should appreciate the results of recent decades of advances over human rights. “On the whole, western democracies have tended in that time to develop the idea of rights,” he argued.

“I know that for some members that appears to be anathema – it makes them choke over the cornflakes – but it is a development that I have always welcomed and that, it seems to me, has delivered substantial benefits for all members of our society, particularly the most vulnerable.”
