Eighty per cent of the Irish road freight going into Europe goes through the UK. There is simply no other effective route. Ferrying straight into France takes twice as long, which is particularly problematic when many of the exports are food products. So the Irish are caught in Britain's gravitational field.

Even without tariffs, the bureaucracy of border checks is a massive issue. Road delivery would face four customs checks - two at departure and arrival into the UK and two again on the other side.
When are the government going to start taking this seriously? :wall:

What is the point of persuading the EU to start considering a trade deal when there is no deal* that will solve the border issue? The only point I can see is to keep the tories in power that bit longer.

* I know there is a deal, to stay in the single market and CU, but I can't see anything in that to convince leavers that we've actually left, so we might as well stay in, the flak will be much the same. I saw a tweet this morning to the effect that Brexit will have to be an economic disaster for them to believe it, could be some truth in that.

"" The third is a particular focus of Dr Golec de Zavala’s research, a trait known as “collective narcissism” – a belief in the unparalleled greatness of one’s country.
“From Brexit, Trump and support for Vladimir Putin in Russia to the nationalist, ultra- conservative government in Poland, studies from our and other labs show that collective narcissism systematically predicts prejudice, aggression and a tendency to interpret innocent behaviours as provocation to the national group," said Dr Golec de Zavala.""

I like the idea of the " unparalleled greatness of one’s country" --- it is so daft and anti-logic and -history that it obviously and sadly has a great future before it !

As well as the potential for so much blood actually to be shed .

But it recorded losses of £125million over the same period, making it ineligible to pay UK corporation tax.

Despite running a loss-making company for six of those eight years, CIL paid its board of directors a total of £43million in wages and other benefits over the same time frame.

Labour MP John Mann said: “It is fundamentally un-British to avoid tax. The Prime Minister should raise this at the breakfast table immediately.”

Finance expert Prem Sikka added: “It’s very odd a business can pay substantial amounts to directors while not turning a profit.”
