Not completely happy with Thornberry's reported comments yesterday on Israel, tbh. Obviously there should be zero tolerance for actual AS (and the Labour conference approved a robust procedure for dealing with that, overwhelmingly) but calls for (eg) boycotting Israeli goods isn't necessarily motivated by "bigotry" at all. It is one of several perfectly legitimate methods of expressing disapproval of a country's actions, and pressing for change.

Owen Paterson, the Conservative former environment secretary, says Economists for Free Trade predict growth at 3% by 2025 after Brexit.

So maybe after 15 years of conservative government they think - through a research organisation who are being particularly optimistic - that they might be able to get GDP back up to the 11 year average that Labour managed before the crash.

Edited to add -unless he means 'two thousand and twenty five years after Brexit', obviously. That would be even more of a fail.

So...the story so far.

Government wants new baseline assessment for pupils starting school. Three choices given. Most popular one is Early Excellence which relies on teacher assessment and not a test. Most schools chose that one. Government realises that all three not comparable and abandons the idea.

Then...they relaunch the idea of baseline assessment but with the idea that it will be a proper test and not assessed by teachers. And guess who's said they're not interested?

The early years training company that provided the most popular Reception baseline assessment last year has pulled out of the competition to set up a new test for four-year-olds.

Around 12,000 schools signed up for the Early Excellence EExBA baseline assessment, one of three government-approved assessments, in 2016.

The Early Excellence baseline was the only assessment purely based on teacher observations – an approach the Department for Education has said it does not want to see in the new baseline assessment.

In a statement released today, Early Excellence said that the government’s proposals for the assessment are “self-contradictory, incoherent, unworkable and ultimately inaccurate, invalid and unusable.”

It said that that the decision to prohibit an observational approach appeared to be “an expression of a purely ideological position” that did not accept the “expertise and experience of the sector”.

I remember hearing an argument that when it came down to it, the argument for test and exams was that it modelled the life of a very certain old fashioned idea of the professions - if you were a lawyer, or a doctor, or a clergyman, then you had to prepare a particular brief, and then deliver it, and then move on to the next thing and prepare again, and examinations were a very good way of testing your ability to do this. Unfortunately they are a very bad way of testing your ability to work as you need to in the world today.
