Number of people spending Christmas period stuck in hospital doubled
Tory cuts to local authorities since 2010 will have seen reductions in social care budgets of £6.3 billion by March 2018 and a 26% drop in the numbers of older people receiving publicly funded care – some 400,000 people.
(Not sure if figures just older, but usual a third of those that do receive are not reminder)

Taxman accused of ‘revenge of the Establishment’ as it slaps huge tax demands on Brexit-backing entrepreneurs
Donors who bankrolled the successful Brexit campaign have accused HM Revenue and Customs of a "political attack" after they were hit with six or seven-figure tax demands on their contributions, The Telegraph can disclose.
Among those targeted are Lord Edmiston, the Midlands entrepreneur, who donated £1million to Brexit campaigns; Peter Cruddas, the City mogul; and Arron Banks, who made millions from his insurance businesses. Letters which could lead to them paying out up to £2m have been issued to them by HMRC in the past fortnight.
In what has been dubbed the "revenge of the Establishment", the tax authorities have seized upon a relatively obscure area of inheritance tax laws which forces people to pay the tax upfront on large "gifts".

Morning all. (Still before lunch so that counts as morning).
A full house now chez ROT - daughter arrived last night and son this morning after I'd just got back from braving Sainsburys.
And this afternoon's jolly is to Covent Garden which I prefer to Westfield which is a hell hole.

If I'm not here, then I'll be in the library. Or the other library.

Our main telly decided to pack in today, if that's of interest.
Totally blank screen, no menu, nothing, just sound.
Hubby currently hooking up the tiny Toshiba from the conservatory as a temporary replacement.
Still, we finally managed to sell our 4 month old dual fuel cooker, so it's not all bad.

I think there's a whole clutch of MR James stories on BBC4 tomorrow evening. And a Maigret on ITV(?). Both a bit more my cup of tea.
Re: Saturday 23rd to Wednesday 27th December 2017
I don't have a tv but Gone With The Wind is a favourite too ? Either FR or GB.
I found some pretty cheap coquilles Saint Jacques for the kids and four grandsons when they come around late on Christmas Day .
Frog4 my second daughter has to endure a late-starting and -finishing and many-coursed traditional French country feast which means they just might do the 30 minutes to arrive by 6.30 with three of the grandsons ...
Her in-laws come directly from peasant Normandy stock, and though successful in business and well-off still retain some very traditional ideas on festive meals.
The hanging-around and interminable meals are very difficult indeed for her, but no sign of divorce so far !

Just watching Passport to Pimlico (dvd, not telly)
Evidence so far, suggests all passports were shades of black, don't know where this blue nonsense came from.

whereas Government lying about reason for existing colour doesn't.Theresa May's communications director has hit out at "fake news" after a claim about the cost of post-Brexit blue British passports was shared tens of thousands of times on Twitter.
Robbie Gibb said deliberately misrepresenting government policies "harms our democracy".
...
There is no Brussels regulation which states that EU countries' passports have to be a certain colour, simply a legally non-binding European Council resolution from 1981 which recommends burgundy red.

"A Brexit Christmas Carol"
.."Listen, Theresa,” the spirit began. “Brexit is a shambles. The party is all over the place. You need some discipline!”
May shivered. The stentorian voice hadn’t changed one jot. The whole situation seemed unbelievable, the very opposite of strong and stable, as much of a waking nightmare as when the letters had started falling off the backdrop when she was making her conference speech. The specter fixed her with an iron glare.

Not just older people of course.Suffice to say I see it differently and somewhat bemused as to why people thought I would remove/revert "back".Not only are they in place potentially for me they make the home accessible for others/friends/relatives/in general.Besides which I am so used to walking around the wheel in shower/wet room I feel claustrophic when in a cubicle thing, they become part of the furniture.
