""So the question has to be put: has the Empress Treeza given Dacre the knighthood he has craved for so many years? She’s given him the unique privilege among editors of one-on-one meetings, even hosting a dinner for him at 10 Downing Street. Yes, favouring the Mail’s editor sends the worst possible signal and legitimises some appallingly bad behaviour. But that hasn’t stopped some deeply unsavoury individuals getting gongs.

My Occam’s Razor says Dacre is getting a gong this time. Pass the sick bucket.""

I *love* music. I have radio 3 or my own music on all the time. A joy of life.

But 90s indie??? Fun for kids back then who knew no better. Just sad to be listening to this stuff once grown. So much more joyous music out there.

I don't think much of Shed Seven - but to consign all my musical memories to the bin on the back of a dislike of certain bits of them is very extreme and, well, very SpinningHugo. I mean, I don't like Mahler, either, but where does that lead me?

For the record, I spent part of yesterday evening listening to Crowded House - mindless drone that I am.

Orr's latest
"...I realised that people cannot be relied upon to make rational choices. We would have fixed global warming by now if we were rational. Instead, there’s a stubborn refusal to let go of the idea that environmental degradation is a “debate” in which there are “two sides”. Debating is a great way of exploring an issue when there is real room for doubt and nuance. But when a conclusion can be reached simply by assembling a mountain of known facts, debating is just a means of pitting the rational against the irrational."
This is good. Other statements made I'm uncertain about

I was a teenager until the back end of 1979. There's a lot I listened to in those years I wouldn't bother with now but still listen to Steely Dan, Graham Parker, Patti Smith, early Ramones, Wire, Magazine, PiL, Siouxsie, Gang of Four, Warren Zevon etc etc.

I even saw Muddy Waters when I was a teenager - hopefully no-one will suggest that listening to him now makes me a wrong 'un. And don't even think about sneering at Duke, Charlie Parker, Mingus etc...
