Something like Efta might be acceptable to leavers if sold as a short term measure, i.e. a stepping stone to full independence, and to some remainers as keeping close to eu.
(For reasons you've already given) Still seems worse option than staying in eu, though.

I'm afraid I am being a little dense here

We now seem to have moved to EFTA meaning 'the Single Market' rather than EEA - I know the two have a close link but the presence of Switzerland messes it up a bit. So do we envisage EFTA+bilaterals or really EFTA-EEA as the definition of the Single Market

Clearly EFTA and the EEA specifically exclude a Custom's Union so if we go for EEA/CU then we are pretty much EU (with some exemptions under the EEA agreement) without a say

I know I can keep going on about this but I feel there is a call for us to condemn anybody who does not sign up to this concept of 'Single Market' but when I ask what treaties set out its scope so I can go and look at them I get different answers.

It also still does not answer my question as to whether EEA and a CU similar to now will be acceptable to the electorate due to the clear democratic deficit in our future relations with the EU - or do you envisage a solution I haven't considered?

Also, these treaties are linked to membership of an organisation - so at the moment EU, EFTA and EEA. In this future relationship are we going to have our links to the EU defined in part by being a member of the EEA or are we expecting a bilateral agreement that starts as the same as the EEA and how would that evolve?

I keep asking this because we see time and again SM/CU thrown around as the answer to everything and Labour (specifically) should just agree to that - I just see some consequences of that decision and would like to be reassured

If I am being particularly stupid then please tell me why and I will shut up about it

Actually, I think your analysis is spot on & I don't think Labour should just follow an existing arrangement, it's just a feeling that the end result is going to be something like Efta/EEA.
Maybe something like
http://efta4uk.eu/into-the-brexit-minefield/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
&
http://www.norgroveblog.co.uk/2018/01/a ... n.html?m=1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
(think these are both Oliver Norgrove)

& Yes, it leaves a democratic defect, and room for improvement.

What's it going to be then, eh?

In the single market or out? Are we with those Labour MP's calling for clarity or are we sitting on the fence hoping for the best?

Because I'll not vote Labour at the next GE if this nonsense continues. And I won't be alone.

Vote Green. Perfectly acceptable on both the single market and customs union, unlike Labour. It is an easy choice.

Shame if Izzard doesn't make the NEC some excellent ideas on dragging the Labour Party vaguely into the twenty first century in inclusivity terms.

@sky

And the pretty basic stuff of access,you would hope Labour would be at the vanguard of reasonable adjustments/alternative practical ways but woefully inadequate eg.you must attend all the meeting from the start(that you difficulty getting to/attending and certainly staying for three plus hours) if you want to vote for branch nomination of candidate etc.
