The delusion behind this crap (excuse me) is the deselection threat.

Yet despite the supposed "iron grip" of Momentum on the party, "moderate" candidates are quite regularly being selected. And some more left wing ones too. I think that's a good thing.

Good morning.

The UK can leave the single market if it wants, but by asking for full access for some sectors, like financial services, but not others, the UK isn't asking for a new relationship it is asking for a new, and reduced, single market, that will lessen the benefits for all those inside. PaulfromYorkshire suggests s small accommodation on freedom of movement of people could be agreed and I don't think this impossible, but some countries would have something to lose from what we would want so it would still be difficult. What the Tories appear to be after though....well, as I have pointed out before, if we had Marine Le Pen as French President threatening a French exit, Merkel ousted in Germany and calls for Catalan independence destabilising Spain, perhaps an embattled EU might have been vulnerable to the Tories divide and conquer approach to negotiations. As it is, Macron here is backing up Barnier's position. We can accept all the rules of the single market in return for all the benefits, or else we can negotiate a third party trade deal like Canada... and the latter is not going to give full access to the single market for financial services that the Tories want. As this reality hits home it's hard to see how the splits over Europe within the Tory party won't start to pull it apart.

I think the nonsense of the government's position is that they are asking for a 'better' trading relationship with the EU states than the EU states have with each other - because they want more or less the same without payments or oversight. I also wonder why this was such a headline story yesterday when all Macron was saying was 'this has always been the position, it continues to be the position now and it will in the future'.

This is piece was first published as Boris Johnson’s dream of a Garden Bridge across the River Thames looked set for cancellation – which happened the following month, leaving the taxpayer with a bill of £52m. The Guardian has calculated that Johnson’s failed projects as Mayor of London cost almost £940m. However, this did not deter the foreign secretary from another grand idea on Thursday – that of a 22-mile bridge across the Channel between England and France.

'Regulatory alignment' didn't do it, nor did 'full acquis' transition, so my bet is that they'll find a way to keep the show on the road.

I've decided to stop worrying about it and return to my pre-referendum position of 'never mind the pros and cons of EU membership, leaving is administratively impossible'.

A compulsory liquidation order was made against Carillion, on the petition of the companies’ directors, on 15 January 2018.
Various business commentators have suggested that Carillion went into compulsory liquidation rather than administration because it had no real assets left to sell.
---
In the eight years from 2009 to 2016, Carillion paid out £554 million in dividends, almost as much as the cash it made from operations.
In the five years from 2012 to 2016, Carillion paid out £217 million more in dividends than it generated in cash from its operations.

Over the eight years from December 2009 to January 2018, the total owed by Carillion in loans increased from £242 million to an estimated £1.3 billion – more than five times the value at the beginning of the decade.

I could be wrong, of course.
There may be no law against Carillion dispensing dividends beyond its means.
Maybe there's a law allowing Carillion to max out its credit card without the means to pay it back.

"The High Court appointed the Official Receiver as liquidator. The court
also appointed 6 executives of PwC as Special Managers to assist the
Official Receiver. The liquidator must act in the interests of the body of
creditors as a whole.

It is a feature of the Carillion liquidation that the Official Receiver is
expected to prioritise the continuity of vital public services while
securing the best outcome for creditors. Unless told otherwise, all
employees, agents and subcontractors providing public services are
being asked to continue to work as normal and they will be paid for the
work they do during the liquidations by the Official Receiver. The
Government has undertaken
to provide the necessary funding required
by the Official Receiver to maintain public services carried on by Carillion
staff, subcontractors and suppliers."

One day, soon I hope, the media will go back to quoting annual figures instead of this ridiculous trend for aggregating them.
It's c£750m p.a, and it's almost certainly already in the budget.
