Labour NEC intervenes in Haringey development row

Labour's National Executive Committee has called on the party's councillors in a north London borough to halt a controversial housing project.

It has advised Labour-run Haringey to pause the project - which has split the local party - if mediation aimed at overcoming the divisions fails.

The project is opposed locally by pro-Corbyn pressure group Momentum.

Momentum is likely to have a strong influence on council policy if Labour wins the May election, so the future of the scheme had already been in doubt.

Momentum immediately welcomed the NEC decision - and some will see this is a symbol of the group's growing influence within the party.

But the BBC understands that the national executive's vote was unanimous, with backing from both the left and right of the party. (BBC News website - my emphasis)

I don't approve of this at all. It doesnt matter what the pros ad cons of the Haringey development are. This is not a matter for the party to decide, but for the elected representatives in Haringey.

What absolute crap you speak

The Labour Party is allowed to express its opinion how people who are elected under the party banner exercise their policy-making power. This has gone on since I was involved in politics

You have clearly never been involved in politics at the local level where you are bombarded with missives from the central party - never worse in my experience than in the Blair years where everything had to be 'on message' and if you weren't you were out!

The elected representatives have the right to vote as they want but the party has the right to express its views

If you think this is wrong then what about whipping where the central party tells democratically elected politicians how to vote - in some cases using threats.

Party politics is a nasty business but this is a fairly mild example of it - and the NEC was united too which suggests that it is not a popular position

Don't you get bored just posting anything anti-Labour you can come up with?

Am looking forward to the eventual movie where Hugo and HSOM meet and form a grudging yet heart warming respect for each other. A bit like The Rock only without Ed Harris.
