Ha,I find it impossible to learn tables, not sure why,
but remember some useful bits like 6 X 7
& work out the rest as I go
ie 8 X 4 is 2 X 4, doubled
9 X n is 10 X n - 1 etc.
Admittedly I was bottom of class in mental arithmetic tests at 12 (speed), though never a disadvantage later.

So you have a legal right to consider work as part of an assessment for social care and income disregarded as far as charging goes but the DWP says no.Of course a possible remedy would have been to work enough to make up the difference at vast more cost in substitute care "integration"

While everyone is talking Johnson & Brexit..

Labour announces that they plan on legistating that people in rented accommodation must be able to have pets if they want to.
Stopping landlords banning pets.
Give me strength.

(yes pets are important, esp for those who live alone, but this is really not the hot issue/topic of the day.)

Today we've launched our plan for animal welfare. We would ban wild animals in circuses, consult landlords on giving tenants the right to keep a pet, strengthen the Hunting Act and expand affordable vet care for people on low incomes. Take a look

Good morning

There is more to life in the UK than Brexit and life goes on.

I don't think Labour intend animal welfare to be a huge announcement but they should not be derailed from doing so because some bumbling idiot decides to use today to make a vacuous speech
You could make this argument on any day at the moment as there seems to be a relay in vacuous speeches by the Government

Keir Starmer has given a strong response to the Johnson speech and so it is not as though they are ignoring it

When there is something concrete about Brexit then perhaps we can then make a day of discussing nothing else, but as you said - today is not the day for it!

Consulting with landlords isn't really going to get very far, I suspect. I think there are good reasons sometimes for banning pets from short term furnished private rentals. The key would be in Labour's general housing policy to get more long term stable leases, like council houses, where tenants take responsibility for carpets and furnishings rather than the landlord, in which case keeping pets is much less of an issue.

It would be nice if pets could be more often accommodated in care homes as well, but I'm not sure it's something you can legislate for in terms of rights, more something to be encouraged through change in cultural attitudes and ensuring there are as few barriers as possible.

Good piece by Abi Wilkinson on the Labour animal welfare proposals - and I must respectfully disagree with AAW about the importance of this topic.

To put it brutally, more people care about these issues than the - still pretty impenetrable to many - mechanics of Brexit.

These proposals are both right in principle and good politics.

I agree, there's a lot of anti-hunting stuff on my twitter.
My interest is in the environment and nature rather than animal welfare but those things go together for many.

Dover will face permanent traffic jams stretching 20 miles out from the port from March 2019 unless Theresa May agrees to the EU’s proposals for a Brexit transition period, the organisation representing the shipping industry and ports has said.

David Dingle, the chairman of Maritime UK, said lorry drivers could be stuck on the main approach roads to Dover for up to two days if there was no deal for a transition. (Politics Live, Guardian)

How many more times do they need to point this out before the "Brexiters" will listen?

(Despairing rhetorical question)

Unhelpful waffle, at that.

The EU are already wary of the UK trying to undercut EU countries with reduced workers rights and environmental protections and have indicated they will mitigate attempts to do so through the kind of trade deal they are willing to agree. I suspect they'll be very interested in the new "freedoms" Boris wishes to exploit and will downgrade the amount of access to EU markets they are willing to grant us accordingly.

In the first speech, being held on Wednesday, the Foreign Secretary will call for national unity over withdrawal. Then, on Saturday, May will detail the ‘security partnership’ that the UK wants to maintain with the EU. Davis, the Brexit Secretary, and Dr Fox, International Trade Secretary, will also set out their agendas. Cabinet Office Minister David Lidington, who backed Remain in the 2016 referendum, will also deliver a speech. The PM will then round off the process in an address setting out how she sees the overall relationship between the UK and Brussels post-withdrawal.
