If giving a speech meant clearly setting out what we expect.... but instead 'these are my opinions, if you don't like them I have others.'

There's still lots of 'it's a negotiation, stupid' talk BTL. The government (and leave supporters) think they are shopping in an antique market - you say 100, I say 50, let's find somewhere to meet. The rest of the EU think we are shopping at a supermarket - if you want these things then this is what it costs. The end. They are being remarkably consistent about this.

May just seems interested in somehow keeping the conservative party together for one more day.

Interestingly the remain rebels are already backtracking on their position - there are already some of the apparent supporters of the customs union amendment saying it is fair from sure that they would vote with Labour against the government. She can pretty much rely on those MPs to not force the issue if she goes against them- she can pretty much rely on the leave extremists to be much more likely to force the issue if she goes against them.

Odds remain most likely on everything falling apart and leaving without a deal, I think.

Thus, even (theoretically) giving in one every last point to the EU's demands could still become a net positive for the British government, if only they can sell it in a way that the tabloids (and their voters) stay on their side.

This tactic is of course based on the assumption that most people won't notice if, on the ground, things then do indeed change, and not necessarily for the better. But with right PR spin, even this fallout might be contained.

I agree. By the way, as counterintuitive as it may sound, but I think the EU could learn something from that. They usually score "real" victories on substance, but almost never succeed in actually selling those to the public. Also a recipe for misery.
