It’s telling that the DfE didn’t respond to this by the time it was published. 99% of the time, we get a response to midnight embargo stories before publication. This one? Nada.
I wonder why that could be?

Morning all.

...first digitally signed mortgage...

Today, the first digital mortgage deed was entered into the Land Register. Part of the ‘Sign your mortgage deed’ service, HM Land Registry is building for a future without the need for a witness to watch as the homeowner applies an ink signature to a paper mortgage deed, saving time and providing a more secure service to homeowners, lenders and conveyancers.

How does Internet-registered signatures without witnesses provide a more secure service, please? Serious question.

Incidentally, I assume that the people raising questions about a gender pay gap on the ground that it's not looking at comparable jobs will be first in line to say the same when next the "public sector pay is more than the private sector" point is raised.

They will, won't they?

It's in all our best interests identifying with each other and recognising fairness isn't a zero-sum endeavour.

Great speech.

I still remain puzzled by her rather quiet fall from grace.

It was great - it's an exhibition of designs and puppets from children's television, which is on at the Wolvo art gallery until the end of the month. There was a whole room dedicated to Firmin and Postgate including the Clangers, Ivor the Engine, Bagpuss and Noggin the Nog - also this friend, made by Firmin, with a note thanking my brother in law for lending it to them (his dad was the creator/voice/puppeteer).

Most of the story is behind their paywall but the Telegraph is reporting that the London Conservative party is considering declaring UDI and effectively existing as a different party.

Sounds a bit like how local Libdem parties started setting up "independent" groups called "...name-of-town...First" to disassociate themselves from the national Liberal Democrat party during the Coalition years when standing for county and parish council elections.

People shouldn't fall for it if it happens.

The party in Scotland was very good at presenting itself as "different" under Davidson, but since the GE the Scots Tory MPs have done May's bidding almost uncritically.

Notable how dissatisfaction with the BBC's handling of politics/current affairs issues seems to be reaching critical mass now.

Yes justified p*** taking out of one BBC reporter (military "expert"?) last night who said they'd looked everywhere for the Johnson quote and couldn't find it, when in fact it had just been shown on another BBC programme

Some at high levels of the BBC are confirmed Tory supporters - as is well known - but I suspect more are keeping their noses clean because they fear what the Tories might do to them if they don't. But if they alienate so many previous supporters, who is going to stop that anyway?

I hope you will allow allow a regular lurker of this fine community (am I allowed to say its improved enormously since the departure of one contributor) to pass comment on the BBC/Media issues related to above.

It has long been apparent to me that the BBC (although I have supported it until fairly recently) has become little better than a Fox news/Pravda outlet for the conditioning of the public mood to government thinking.

Until very recently my wife (who is not a political geek but does take an interest) has thought my view extreme. To confirm the point Anatoly made above she has now come to the conclusion that it has indeed become the state broadcaster being convinced by the BBC reporting (or lack of it) of the Novachuk affair. Her view.....little or no doubt from the BBC that the government line is to be shouted from the rooftops whilst not addressing the fact a significant proportion of the population have serious questions of that line.

The Newsnight attempt at absolving Boris Johnson last night pretty much convinced her of her revised view.

Frankly I am not sure they worry or care about this attitude as they are becoming so blatant about it.

To illustrate this I made the mistake of watching (at least for 5 minutes) the newspaper review on the BBC news channel last night. This consisted of Joanne Nadler described as a political journalist (Wikipedia tells me her husband works at conservative central office and she herself, a life long tory has been a conservative councillor in Wandsworth) and Jane Merrick Daily Telegraph contributor and best friend of the execrable Isobel Oakeshott towing the government line and laying into anybody that has the merest question mark about the veracity of the tory line.

Which leads me to try to think of anyone with a vaguely left wing point of view (Guardian journalist don't count) that has been seen on BBC (or Sky for that matter) news reviews in the past few months. I am struggling past Rachel Shabi. Anybody help me out? There must be more? Help me out here.

As far as anniversaries go, Michael’s is not one to celebrate. This month marks one year since the government brought in one of its most controversial “welfare” policies: cutting the benefit for people too ill to work – Employment and Support Allowance – by £30 a week.

Far from the only one of course, another targeted one as from today.Caught in the nexus, you are fucked. At a fundamental level purposefully making it harder should appal all.

Labour’s new General Secretary Jennie Formby made a strong start to her new role with a first-day email to all Labour members calling on them to work with her to unite the party for the good of the country, with a particular emphasis on addressing instances of antisemitism and other abuse – and laying out her roadmap to ensure all issues are dealt with fairly.

Two days later, she has followed that up with a communication to every one of Labour’s 600+ CLP (constituency Labour party) secretaries, asking them to make sure that all members understand how any discussions of these issues must be conducted:

Resident expert of #bbcnews just said the miraculous recovery of Yulia Skripal was because Porton Down would have had antidotes.
We were previously told there were no antidotes to Novochek.
They're making it up as they go along.

‏@delhi_dave
They, Porton Down, can only produce an antidote if they've got #Novichock. Which I believe they said they didn't have....somebody has got a very fertile imagination. I understand Iran formulated #Novichock in 2016 to make an antidote. The first country to do so according to OPCW.
