Free travel for U-25s?

I can see why U-22s woks to cover HE/FE students but 25? Not sure that's an effective use of public money. When I was 25 I'd alteady been working 7 years...

So it does appear that May is going to have us join military action in Syria without any recourse to parliament.

Whilst there is no obligation for her to do so, it has almost become a constitutional convention since the 2003 Iraq conflict that the HoC should get a say on these things. And given that there is already (according to polls) little public enthusiasm for getting ourselves involved in this mess, I can't imagine this will make it any more popular.

Trump says no timetable for Syria attack

Trump is dialling down his bellicose rhetoric of Wednesday. In his latest tweet he claims an attack on Syria may not take place.

Donald J. Trump

@realDonaldTrump

Never said when an attack on Syria would take place. Could be very soon or not so soon at all! In any event, the United States, under my Administration, has done a great job of ridding the region of ISIS. Where is our “Thank you America?”

The OPCW has confirmed the UK's identification of the nerve agent used in Salisbury.

Not that it has raised much interest on twitter. The conspiracy theorists who originally questioned the Novichok claim have already moved on.

Willow -- I'm not surprised that no interest was raised in twitterdom . The OPCW just confirmed what was already known, and did not add new info to directly incriminate the Russian state .

If you want a conspiracy from a chemist, it still doesn't say what it was.

That is still secret.

Afternoon folks,
That’s true, but that was then. My eldest spent last year working in that London (he’s 24) and his biggest costs were rent, food and transport. In fact, they were his only costs, as after them, he had nowt left. Which is why he’s back in Toon. As long as young adults are employed as casual staff in our gig economy, they need all the help they can get.

Many conspiracy theorists I saw doing the rounds on twitter were questioning it was Novichok or even a nerve agent at all. Craig Murray was stating as fact that the government were refusing to hand samples to the OPCW, even while Boris Johnson had already stated they were asking the OPCW to confirm the UK's findings. People were excitedly sharing his misinformation all over social media. My point is that despite being provable wrong then, he'll probably be excitedly followed over whatever he comes up with next.

As to there being no information that incriminates Russia, this is true which is why Theresa May only said it was "highly likely" the Russian state was responsible and why Johnson should be sacked for saying otherwise. What is interesting , though, is the OPCW confirmed the very high purity of the agent, which does tend to support the government line that this was produced by a state actor.

Link to Murray's demonstrably untrue assertion the government was refusing to provide the OPCW a sample:

Well secret or not, at least it's accepted it was definitely a chemical substance now and not food poisoning or a hoax! You just wouldn't believe some of the wild stuff on my Twitter timeline a few weeks back. It's quietened down a bit now.

Labour’s free bus travel for the under 25s is a decent policy, but a political masterstroke
https://www.newstatesman.com/2018/04/la ... sterstroke" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
As with tuition fees and rental caps before it, the bus announcement has pushed the Tories into making a bunch of statements suggesting that they don’t care about young people, don’t think they’re worth spending money on, and don’t have the slightest clue about the problems that they face.

Nusrat Ghani, for example, accused the opposition of “bribing young people” (this, unlike bribing old people, is for some reason verboten).

Interesting that the Labour under-25s free bus policy seems to have attracted more attention to the subject of age groups than the purpose and provision of public transport.

I have to admit, I wasn't keen on the 25 yrs cut off for the national living wage, so I'm not entirely convinced in this context either (I was always bemused by the 25 yr cut off for the young persons railcard, as well, even when I had one).

If the policy underneath the populist (if rather arbitrary) youth offer headline has some serious suggestions for bus transport policy reform, however, I guess that's what's important. Certainly bus services in many areas won't survive under the current commercialised, austerity-ridden system.

Having thought about this bus thing some more, I think it kind of relates to what HindleA has being saying about social care. We need policies based on circumstances, rather than on arbitrary assumptions about age groups.

Although getting rid of tuition fees appealed to younger people, it applied to anyone in the circumstance of being a first time student, so was a policy designed to address the issue of higher education funding.

What issue is free bus travel for under -25s addressing?

If low wages, why not extend the national living wage to everyone?
If cost of going to college, well, the EMA seemed to work pretty well, why not bring it back?
If poor/lack of bus services, well free bus travel for the over 65s hasn't done that, so why would this?

We need a bus policy that's about buses and everyone that uses them. I'm not sure prioritising certain age groups helps achieve this. But it is just a niggle. The Tories don't think about bus users at all

Finland has found the answer to homelessness

"...how do we expect people to address complex personal problems while exposed to the chaos of life on the streets?

When people are given homes, homelessness is radically reduced, engagement in support services goes up and recovery rates from addiction are comparable to a “treatment first” approach. Even more impressive is that there are overall savings for government, as people’s use of emergency health services and the criminal justice system is lessened."

I quite like the environmental aspect, if it encouraged young people in towns and cities to use the buses rather than buying a car, or even just postpones the car-buying for a year or two, that's good. Higher demand for buses means better services, I think it would be different from pensioners who in effect just keep the minimum service ticking over through the day. Young people would be using them at peak times.

Your last bit is key, every time Labour announce a policy we can easily find something to niggle about, but then compare it with the tories? There is no comparison.

Appearing (again) on #bbcqt tonight, Kate Andrews of the (mysteriously funded) IEA. You've probably seen/heard quite a lot of Kate recently, it's her (at least) 67th UK 2018 media appearance. Not bad for a non-UK citizen in her 20s with no political/legal/economic qualifications.
Quite.

I stuck it on just now and lasted a minute with her whiny voice...and off.
