Today's Brexit warning from Donald Tusk:
"The UK’s decision on Brexit has caused the problem [of the Irish border] and the UK will have to solve it. Without a solution there will be no withdrawal agreement and no transition."
Where are the EU going to go with this though? No withdrawal agreement and no transition is going to make the Irish border problem disastrously worse, surely.
I've thought for a while that May's strategy is to use this exact scenario to bounce the EU into accepting her favoured 'cherry-picking' deal, don't really want to see them fall for it.

Don't think it's been mentioned nearly enough that when the Tory/LibDem Coalition brought in the 2014 Immigration Act which caused the Windrush Scandal, only 18 MPs had the courage to vote against. They included David Lammy, Diane Abbott, John McDonnell and Jeremy Corbyn.
Folk pointing out that Diane Abbott predicted precisely what is happening when this was debated in Parliament.

There's no knowing what's going on behind closed doors or if there are different 'back-positions' being held but in public it still seems remarkably consistent and clear that the EU are saying no deal at all without a locked down agreement on the future of the border, and that this means an agreement to ongoing full alignment if nothing else. So if a failure to come up with anything else for the border stops a wider agreement, the backstop is no ongoing deal BUT a nailed down stage one agreement that includes our commitment to maintain full alignment to keep the Irish border as it is.

When it comes down to it, this is all about what leaving the EU means in reality rather than in propaganda. We have built up commitments and practices and we can't simply walk away from them without there being consequences. In this case, perhaps we can live without a trade deal with Europe and with a clear and obvious reputation as a country that will not keep its word as we go looking for other international agreements elsewhere.

from No10: destruction of landing cards was an "operational decision" by the UK Border Agency. Ie Not a decision by a Labour Home Secretary or minister.

I am now highly confused - the Government/ Home Office released a background statement last night asserting “In 2010, the decision was taken by the UK Border Agency” - the PM says made in 2009 by Labour.

I did think it was odd that May could have initiated the decision to destroy the landing cards if it happened in 2010, taking such a decision and making it happen in 7 months would be a bit of a stretch for our bureaucracy.

May at PMQs clearly intended the impression to be given that the decision was taken by a Labour Home Sec. Even if she did not actually say that explicitly.

As it happens, some journalists actually appear to be doing their jobs for once and calling her out on this.

Labour really must improve its research. It's a given that the Conservatives will produce a lie to counter questions to which the correct answer is not to their liking.

Home Office claims that the destruction of Windrush-era landing cards in 2010 had no impact on the rights of those individuals to stay in the UK have been dramatically undermined by the evidence of two new whistleblowers. Staff, in fact, routinely used landing card information as part of their decision-making process, and saw the Windrush landing cards as a useful resource, according to information from two new Home Office whistleblowers.

Their accounts have been further supported by the emergence of Border Force guidance, obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, that appears to contradict the government’s justification of a decision to destroy an archive of Windrush-era arrival slips.

The Border Force note appears to undermine the Home Office and Downing Street’s rejection of the documents’ significance. Giving details of how landing cards are used currently, the document stated: “Information from a landing card may be used by an entry clearance officer in making a decision on a visa application.”

Standards commissioner launches inquiry into claims Hunt broke MPs' code of conduct

Jeremy Hunt, the health secretary, is being investigated by Kathryn Stone, the parliamentary commissioner for standards, her office has confirmed. The allegation is that he failed to declare his interest in a property company. PoliticsHome broke the story. We knew that a complaint had been submitted to the commissioner, but that does not automatically trigger an investigation because some complaints get dismissed as without merit. This one, though, is serious enough to merit a proper inquiry.(Politics Live, Guardian)
