Friday 20th April 2018

Post by PaulfromYorkshire »

As anticipated two Lib gains from Con in yesterday's by-elections in Thatcham (Berkshire) and Lymm (Warrington).

I think the third was in Scotland and I think they always take longer to count because of the different system.

Look forward to the proper round up later ;-)

It’s not just the Windrush generation terrorised by Theresa May’s ‘Go Home’ climate
Theresa May's "hostile environment" is one of those very rare things - a government policy that effectively delivers exactly what it promises.

Most dodgy Tory policies are dressed up in fake aims and empty promises of what they will achieve - "fairness", "financial savings" etc, whilst clearly trying to achieve something rather different.

But you have to give it to May, she promised a hostile environment and that's what we got. And that's why she's coming unstuck. Basic honesty has been her undoing. While the most abominable of policies at the DWP continue to duck and dive scrutiny under a cloak of virtuous "helping people into work", trying to claim hostile outcomes were an accidental consequence of a hostile policy is really pushing it. Can she survive this?

Many of those surveyed believed national pride is on the wane, with younger generations placing less importance on patriotism than ever before,
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/h ... 12786.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Perhaps one 'man's' patriotism is another 'man's' imperial racism
We argue against the view that disadvantaged white working class respondents are especially xenophobic, and show that racist views are not strongly associated with social position. In exploring the clustering of different nationalist and racist sentiments amongst economic and cultural elites, and comparing these with ‘disenfranchised’ respondents with little economic and cultural capital, we show that it is actually the elite who are most likely to articulate ‘imperial racism’.

1981 Nationality Act - British born only automatically acquired citizenship if at least one parent was British other than by descent. Born overseas you also acquired British citizenship if at least one parent was... as before. This was effectively a grandparent clause, sometimes known as 'The Zola Budd' effect.

Its one reason why he is never mentioned that much in forums like this one these days compared to previously - literally nobody (his employers included, probably) now takes him seriously.

High court finds two-child rule exception perverse

The High Court has today ruled that one of the Government’s key welfare reform policies, the two-child rule for tax credits and universal credit is in part unlawful

This is an important in-road into a flagship welfare reform policy. The irrationality of limiting the exception for children cared for in kinship arrangements* to third or subsequent children has been raised on numerous occasions by various bodies, yet rather than accepting such legitimate criticisms and removing the restriction, it has required taking the DWP to court for the unlawfulness to be properly recognised.’

‘This is a policy which is not simply about what level of benefits predominantly working families are entitled to. Rather, it is a policy which necessarily encroaches upon very personal and intimate decisions about family size and planning and treats some children as less deserving of a benefit intended to meet their basic needs purely because of their birth order. We do not agree with the judge’s findings on the various human rights arguments and will look to appeal this case further’.

Employers confused by new GCSE grading system as a quarter think bottom grade is the best mark

More than one in five employers incorrectly thought that 1 was the top grade, according to a new report published by the exams watchdog.

Ofqual commissioned a YouGov survey of 2,974 employers, universities, school leaders, parents, teachers and members of the general public to ask about perceptions of GCSEs and A levels.

Some 23 per cent of employers wrongly believed that 1 was the top grade, compared with 64 per cent who correctly stated that 9 was.

Eight per cent of universities also thought that 1 was the top grade, along with six per cent of headteachers, the poll found. The proportion rose to 16 per cent among parents.

Last summer, students received their marks for GCSEs for the first time under the new numerical system which uses grades one to nine, rather than from A* to G
The numerical grades were designed by former Education Secretary Michael Gove as part of a package of reforms to toughen up syllabuses and to counter grade inflation at the top end, since A and A* are split between seven, eight and nine.

Almost a third (31 per cent) of employers, and 15 per cent of universities said they were unaware of the new grade 9 to 1 system.

Seamus Nevin, head of employment and skills policy at the Institute of Directors, which represents leaders of British business, said that many employers will only discover that the GCSEs have changed once they begin receiving CVs from pupils.

“They might think, ‘What is this gibberish and what does it mean and how has it changed from previous grading systems?'" he told the Times Education Supplement (TES).

“If the employer is time-poor and resource-constrained then they can, on occasions, be quite keen to get through as many [CVs] as possible. So if they have a CV that they don’t understand then they might opt for the ones that they do.”

Meanwhile, more than half of parents do not know that a nine represents a top grade under the new system, according to a survey of over 1,000 parents by TES and Mumsnet.

Students will receive their marks for GCSEs this week for the first time in the new numerical system
Of those who were polled, a fifth believed that the new grades will harm their children’s future prospects. Justine Roberts, the founder and chief executive of Mumsnet, said that there is heightened "anxiety and confusion" about GCSEs.

A Department for Education spokesperson said they have been “raising raise awareness” about the new grading system since 2014.
