The lyrics reference 'things going on for 10,000 years'
I think that's an allusion to the Tao Te Ching

One of my favourite chapters
Empty yourself of everything.
Let the mind rest at peace.
The ten thousand things rise and fall while the Self watches their return.
They grow and flourish and then return to the source.
Returning to the source is stillness, which is the way of nature.
The way of nature is unchanging.
Knowing constancy is insight.
Not knowing constancy leads to disaster.
Knowing constancy, the mind is open.
With an open mind, you will be openhearted.
Being openhearted, you will act royally.
Being royal, you will attain the divine.
Being divine, you will be at one with the Tao.
Being at one with the Tao is eternal.
And though the body dies, the Tao will never pass away.

I recommend the album "Album 1700", available in full on youtube. (Skip "Leaving on a Jet Plane" if, like me, you can't stand it. The rest is great.)

Nationally, six per cent of those surveyed said they would not vote the same way, and another six per cent said they were not sure. However, Leave voters were twice as likely to say they would change their vote as Remain voters - eight per cent to four per cent.

'No basis to remain': woman, 63, told she will be removed from UK to Jamaica

Yarl’s Wood detainee handed papers saying she will be placed on specially chartered flight

A 63-year-old woman has been told she has been booked on an immigration removal flight to Jamaica, as the government scrambles to minimise the damage over the scandal of the removal of citizenship rights from Windrush migrants.

The woman, who is currently being held at the Yarl’s Wood immigration removal centre, was handed papers on Friday telling her she had no basis to remain in the country and she was to be removed on a specially chartered flight to Jamaica.

She was told she would be removed after five working days from the date of service of the letter, suggesting that the flight could depart any time after Thursday.

Movement for Justice, an immigrants’ rights group, informed the Guardian of the woman’s case. It has organised an emergency demonstration outside the Home Office and the Jamaican high commission on Tuesday.(Guardian)

The more excitable people out there were getting really worked up over a Labour stall telling students that they could vote twice in local elections...and didn't seem to take any notice when it was pointed out that this is entirely legal. But it's only that way in local elections - not in general elections. I guess because most students have two addresses and therefore are affected by local decisions in both home and university areas.
And because so long as those two addresses are not in the same local authority, you are using your two votes to elect people to different bodies - so you're not duplicating your vote in an election. I don't know if this is a general loophole that doesn't get much attention - I've only ever heard it talked about with students. Can you vote in two (or more) different council elections if you have two (or more) addresses in different local authorities?

Independent - Brexit: Britain set to offer EU immigration deal 'very similar' to free movement
Britain is set to make an offer to the EU on future immigration which would see arrangements “very similar” to current free movement rules put in place after Brexit, The Independent has learned....The plan would see a high level of access to the UK for EU citizens in the future, but would leave the British government power to halt it in certain circumstances.

The Times story isn't the rumour I mentioned recently, btw. There have been a few stories around for a while now that have been alleging a large amount of Russian bot activity on Corbyn supporting social networks, not necessarily because of Corbyn, more because of their size and reach. Why Russia would try to help get a Labour government get elected is not convincingly explained in the Mail rehash of the Times story I read. They might be meddling and spreading misinformation in a general attempt to disrupt our democratic system, but actually getting Corbyn elected wouldn't be in Russian interests, I would have thought, because he would threaten their access to UK territory tax havens via the City of London.

The Tories & leave campaigns have real questions to answer. About donations from Russian oligarchs to the Tory party. About where Arron Banks' money came from. Who donated money to the DUP and why the Tories are blocking recent legislation that would compel them to reveal it. Why did disparate leave campaigns spend millions with obscure Canadian company Aggregate IQ. And so on.

Molly Scott Cato has a blog that shows links between several key leave campaigners and Russia and the Guardian isn't letting it go either. It seems to me that a story that implicates Labour with Russia also attempts to minimise the Tory Brexit/Russia connection by suggesting Russia is meddling everywhere indiscriminately. Perhaps they are, but personally I'm sticking to that age old rule - if you want to know what's going on, follow the money. And the money appears to lead to a far right tie up between the interests of the wealthy elite such as the likes of Robert Mercer and Putin's Russia.

I think I said the other day that to every new policy the question needs to be put - "What problem is this trying to solve?"

England voter ID trial 'a solution in search of a problem'

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/20 ... oral-fraud
None of the five English boroughs taking part in a controversial trial of compulsory voter ID in local elections next month has experienced a single instance of polling station impersonation in the past decade.

Four boroughs told the Guardian they had no record of any offences, while one had a single allegation in 2006, which was dealt with by a police caution.

It emerged after the Electoral Reform Society said the plan was deeply flawed and appeared a “calculated effort by the government to make voting harder for some citizens”.

Our local paper ran a story on this last week because our MP, Jacob Rees-Mogg, makes an appearance as a "regulation burner" and "money man". We all know he's a regulation burner and he's definitely a money man, rumoured to be worth up to £150m, but there's also a Russia connection with his investment firm known to manage large sums invested in Russia.

Top 10 books about council housing
I read this ages ago, but remember thinking it was pretty good -

"Throwing the House Out of the Window" (fiction) by Ben Richards. It's about a young council housing officer in East London (based on Ben Richards' own experiences as one).
It's quite a good read to the best of my recollection but, by now, it must be over 15 years old.

Anyway, worth a shot if you happen upon a copy.
