About the same as the recently removed housing support in benefit rather than an interest bearing loan.Highly related both facillitated continued work (one penny earned disbars you from loan option),independence,vast cost savings.h

As with many areas of the South West, the Tories have benefited there from the Libdem collapse in 2015 and other parties (including UKIP) were all but wiped out in 2017, which basically means for Labour to win parliamentary seats there next time they'll need to take votes directly from the Tories (or possibly via a recovery of the Libdem vote hurting the Tories again).
So these local elections could provide some clues as to what may or may not happen in 2022. Can Labour take votes directly from the Tories? Can they benefit from a Libdem recovery? Swindon may provide some hints, so it's definitely one to watch.

Retired couple Len and Val never missed a mortgage payment - but now they face losing their home.
I see the argument over the wisdom of post retirement mortgage(SMI) but certainly not for the sick/disabled.Their support is way more than ours was (and the average)We would have breached an agreement,outwith control,vast cost saving investment,the trouble with universally applying hence universal malicious stupidity,"difficult cases" when it so clearly simple,a tad of recognition of circumstances,mutually beneficial to individual and State.

There's a lot of UK housing dysfunction in this story. When the couple returned to the UK in their 50s with no savings, was a mortgage really the best option? In a way, yes, because we don't have secure long term lets available in the UK. But the original mortgage was steep because they had so few years of working life left to pay it. Then there was a decision to borrow more money to spend on the house. A lot of people overestimate the value such work adds to a property. Often it adds no value at all, so they may have depleted a chunk of their equity with that. I'm not sure they should have been lent that money at that time. And then, when they could no longer earn as much because of ill health, they switched to interest-only. Interest-only payments are great for the short-term, such as after redundancy or while fighting a serious illness. And I do agree where the state has a duty of care to the sick and disabled, paying mortgage interest can be much cheaper than paying housing benefit for rent for potentially less suitable accommodation. Would that apply to this couple, though? They have the ability to house themselves adequately via the rented sector, after all, or at least ought to for the money they can afford to pay for themselves. Which brings us to the final dysfunction. This story is a very good example of the multitude of inter-related things that have to change to get housing right. We're doing absolutely everything wrong at the moment, that's the problem.
