That has improved a bit for Labour since early this morning.

No surprise - John Curtice was one of the few on TV warning that some of the early results (eg Sunderland/Nuneaton) might not be totally representative.

Redbridge Labour now have 51 seats, an increase of 16.
Labour lost out in Wandsworth by only 141 votes.
Gained 4 councillors in Westminster.
Took Plymouth and Kirklees Council.
Labour is now the largest party in Trafford.

No, the Labour NEC agreed that since this is a "shadow" role at present he doesn't have to stop being an MP (for the time being, anyway)

Terrible results for Labour.

I've no idea how you would set up a pilot with a proper control that would produce a meaningful answer, but it seems clear that the tories weren't bothered anyway. They just thought they'd tinker about with it in case it did them any good.

Oh and is it just me or did the Libdems have a good afternoon? Albeit from a relatively low base of course. With the UKIP vote pretty much absorbed now, the Libdems taking votes from the Tories might start causing them problems going forwards (one hopes). Rather off them than us, at any rate.

Stephen Fisher, an academic who works with Prof John Curtice on BBC election analysis, says in a Prospect article that Brexit helped to explain voting patterns in the elections - except in areas with Jewish populations.

The Conservatives have so far made 163 seat gains and suffered 165 losses. As a result they will likely end the day with a similar overall tally as the one they started with. Most, 89, of the Conservative losses were in London, and most, 132, of their gains were outside London. This differential in the Tory performance is part of a broader pattern whereby the Conservatives won more votes and seats in places which were more supportive of Brexit. As a result, the councils the party has won (Basildon, Peterborough, Redditch) are all places that voted to leave the EU at a rate of 61 per cent or more in 2016.

The exception to this rule tells an important story linked to the row over anti-Semitism in the Labour Party. Of the wards across the country where the BBC collected the votes, Labour is up by just 3 points where more than 4 per cent of the population is Jewish, but the party is up by 7 points on average elsewhere. This correlation had a particular impact in both Barnet and Bury where the Jewish population is relatively large. That Labour not only failed to take its (notionally) easiest target in London, but the Conservatives actually managed to gain six seats and take control of Barnet (where 38 per cent voted Remain) is quite remarkable.

Why is it remarkable at all, amid the ongoing deluge of Labour anti-semitism stories?

Labour just have to suck it up, unfortunately.

Nuneaton is interesting isn't it, because prior to Brexit it was a bit bellwethery.

But now it's almost off limits for Labour it seems. Interesting times.

Sunderland I was very aware of. You can find me on Twitter pointing out that the result in Pallion was almost exactly the same as the by-election in Feb, so not really newsworthy.

I've trawled through the election stuff in the local rag and, apart from mentioning, yesterday, that Gosport was part of the voter ID "pilot", there seems to be no reference to the voter ID issue and whether it was good, bad, or indifferent. I find that rather, well, sinister is the word which springs first to mind.
