Morning All and a beautiful one here in the Pennines :-)

Just did the lad's papers with him for the last time - he's got an after school job instead. The Tory press have of course managed to spin the election results into support for May and Brexit, so there we go.

I hope those (who should know better) in Labour who are conspiring to undermine Labour's modest achievements are proud of what they are enabling.

Rant over ;-)

It's quite interesting that they seem to be specifically spinning it as a good thing for the ultras. This was always the biggest problem with dealing with the leave campaign - your arguing with people who have a pure and undiminshable faith, from the perspective of reality where things are more complicated. Any outcome would have been seized as 'this proves the need for a clean break from the EU and a glorious future outside the custom's union' regardless of politics or economics or anything because, like 'private good public bad', all that matters is that they are right about leaving.

If you can get past the fact that this is a review of a book on the history of modern french intellectualism so why on earth would you even want to start, this from the guardian is a brilliant read about the modern west and attitudes to the other, especially Islam.

The End of the French Intellectual by Shlomo Sand review – from Judeophobia to Islamophobia
Sand starts his history with the Dreyfus affair and ends it, nauseated, in 2015, as the French establishment marches in solidarity with murdered workers at Muslim-baiting magazine Charlie Hebdo and there are calls for Michel Houellebecq to be inducted into the Académie Française for his novel Submission (one that imagines France busted down to a mere province of a Mediterranean caliphate). “The modern Parisian intellectual was born in the battle against Judeophobia, the twilight of the intellectual in the early 21st century is happening under the sign of a rise in Islamophobia,” Sand argues.

It's been revealed nearly 4,000 voters were turned away in the pilot voter ID areas. To put this in to context, there was found to be 28 cases of voter fraud after the 2017 General Election. This pilot was no more than an utterly disgraceful attempt at voter suppression.

You can claim RedTory,BBC bias etc as much as you want, the fact is rather than gaining Tory consolidation at worst for them is happening is certain areas, previous Tory rule abberations are becoming the norm and ever harder to reverse. Not only that, hitherto unthinkeable Tory areas are becoming so and others reacheable for them.As I said yesterday, stemming the tide would be good.Far more fundamental than about Brexit,Labour are losing/not generating replacement support to anything like what is needed. What used to be relied on no longer applies.

Alastair Campbell berates Labour over local election results

Tony Blair’s former adviser launches broadside against party unable to beat shambolic Tories
(Guardian)
https://www.theguardian.com/politics/20 ... erformance

Edited to add -

Alastair Campbell says (from the article):
“My Labour tribalism is being pushed to the limit . . . . by the feeling that some in the leadership and their supporters feel much greater animus against other Labour supporters than against Tories.”
I feel that that's always been a problem with Labour - and it's not a new thing brought about by Momentum. Alastair Campbell (and it's only human, I suppose) just doesn't like to be on the receiving end. The Conservatives do it, too. They're just better at hiding it.

For almost the last 40 consecutive years, the UK has had a Tory national government for all but 13 of them
It's astounding Labour gets a look in at all regardless of leader
Labour aren't radical - no one gets their stuff confiscated, high-earners stay rich
yet lots of resources going into maintaining inequality, polarity
Last 40 years Tory for all but 13

Some areas and electoral groups are moving away from Labour, but others are doing the same thing with the Tories.

That explains the current rough stalemate, politically speaking.

Not much doubt either that Brexit is doing a great deal to prop the current Tory voting coalition up. What happens when that is decided?

Somebody needs to run with this, the problem is they then get "so you are OK with voting fraud, then?" chucked at them.

Lethal neglect and active inaction – government policy and the premature deaths of people with learning disabilities.

"the government implemented a policy of active inaction – the appearance of doing something about a problem – knowing full well that it wouldn’t change a thing. And because of that quite deliberate policy choice, in those 5 years; hundreds, perhaps thousands of people with learning disabilities will have died as a result of what is effectively – a subtle form of lethal neglect.

People have accused this government of organisational discrimination toward people with learning disabilities, perhaps it is, but personally I think it’s far worse than that.
