I was once quite proud of being a Brit, and spent quite some time reflecting on the matter, believing us to be on balance, funny and reasonably fair. But looking back, even during my lifetime, we have more or less consistently voted in the Tories, voted for Brexit, elected the likes of "red carpet for Trump" Mogg into power, and committed ourselves to being seen as a nation that sends immigrants (doesn't matter what sort) home.

Well, Rees-Mogg is right in a way. If you accept the common sense arguments in favour of a customs union then you're half way to accepting the sense of remaining in the single market. And it's decision time on EEA/EFTA. Labour can't stall any longer, they have to start making definitive decisions and as they make those decisions being all things to all people will become increasingly difficult:

TBG - very sensible article, tho the Tories are quite cruel and unpleasant enough already, re DWP against the disabled, the Home Office against anyone they can persecute !

On tectonic plates i was listening to France Culture earlier on the rise of Europe-wide racism/nationalisms etc .

I'm drinking some 'crafted apple cider with blackberries', it was quite expensive, and do you know what it tastes like?

An Ice Pop. The Seventies ones. Like it was just in that magical process of melting but still being cold.

Perhaps it's part of that whole nostalgia thing, or perhaps some Hipsters have made cider that tastes like Ice Pops by mistake.

Either way it's quite nice on a night as warm as this.

I just walked through Leeds city centre and it was mildly chaotic, mainly young drunken women in various states of distress, there was one being sick next to the bus station loudly claiming her 'chip pizza' had made her ill.

Earlier in the day it was male gym nuts going topless, mostly wearing shorts and flip flops. I thought they looked like twats but then I guess I wasn't their target audience.

And to get away with this ramble I guess I have to say something about Corbyn.

I guess he's never ordered a chip pizza.

I am mainly drinking vodka and orange - with the vodka fresh from the freezer and the orange juice from the fridge, to link with the whole 'ice pop' thing - and I am reminded of traveling through France on a coach when I was 18 and drinking this with the duty free vodka we'd bought on the boat, feeling all grown up because we could take it whilst various other people who'd pushed it too far in the bar on the boat were throwing up.

Just reminded me of this, haven't had any not this for ages, but it's a spicy vodka, manly tasting of cloves,
which anaesthesatises (possibly wrong, but spell checker seems happy with it) your throat as it goes down.

I agree with all of this. Wren-Lewis has come to the same conclusions I have and explains his reasoning very well. More than anything, I feel the showdown in the Commons over what kind of Brexit we have needs to come as early as possible. Theresa May should not be allowed to drag this out. EU nationals in the UK and UK nationals in the EU need clarity on where we are headed. Leaving them in limbo for years to come is the worst possible fudge. And that's before you even start to consider the needs of businesses that need sufficient time to prepare for future arrangements.

Some sense, but then it's not just brexit where Tories grip on reality fails, such as not accepting what her party has already become.

And for too long the Conservative One Nation tradition has tried to accommodate these demands. Well, enough is enough. I refuse to accept quietly that we become a Party which turns its back on the young, on those from diverse communities and on moderate middle of the road voters who want MPs to talk about the things that make a difference to their lives

Perhaps the "moderates" will finally demonstrate its not just the JRM faction who can get restless.
