I was once quite proud of being a Brit, and spent quite some time reflecting on the matter, believing us to be on balance, funny and reasonably fair. But looking back, even during my lifetime, we have more or less consistently voted in the Tories, voted for Brexit, elected the likes of "red carpet for Trump" Mogg into power, and committed ourselves to being seen as a nation that sends immigrants (doesn't matter what sort) home.

The public do not want this. They recognise that the campaign for press regulation was never about helping victims of press intrusion, it was about politicians, celebs and millionaires using them as human shields to silence the press that holds them to account. 9/10

Well yes, I can see that for politicians because they're public servants but "celebs and millionaires"? That just looks like a "We want to intrude into people's private lives whether they like it or not"

Well, Rees-Mogg is right in a way. If you accept the common sense arguments in favour of a customs union then you're half way to accepting the sense of remaining in the single market. And it's decision time on EEA/EFTA. Labour can't stall any longer, they have to start making definitive decisions and as they make those decisions being all things to all people will become increasingly difficult:

My own experiences with UK peoples I know and love
Loving, uncomplicated, purity of heart and intention
For all the worldliness of the UK nation's history, UK people are most often ingenuous, without affectations
Isolation, insecure employment and housing, haphazard education system varying throughout the country, astounding disparities, intentional chaos from Westminster, years of loneliness, children grown and flown, spiritual needs unacknowledged, world comes streaming through a device, a confused and confusing place, disordered, moving too fast, the soul can't keep up with all that
It's no wonder we can get side-tracked, a few wicked power people capitalise fear, anger and tell lies about the world and people in it, plot their own course and call it, 'the will of the people'.

The BBC has used a graphic showing the results from last week’s local elections that depicts a Conservative party net loss of thirty-three councillors:

However, other news sources quote a much higher figure, such as the Guardian and Press Association:

https://skwawkbox.org/2018/05/06/tory-l ... r-and-why/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Meanwhile: Some good election breakdown graphs on this Twitter feed.

There is a case for using both methodologies.

Seat changes since the GE are calculated compared to the previous one, any byelections in between don't count. Though there is a case for saying the much greater number of local byelections (and changes) in any four year cycle gives more legitimacy to the PA way of doing things.

Its not any media conspiracy (in either case) this time round, though ;)

Late Summer, 1357
post-Battle of Poitiers, King Jean of France, sumptuous hostage, living it up in the Savoy, London

Back on the continent, the Dauphin-Regent asserts himself a bit and reinstates some councillors disliked by the Council of Thirty-six led by Marcel, mercantile magnates of the Third Estates. In response, the Dauphin's Marshals are murdered in his palace chamber, the Dauphin witnesses the entire grisly spectacle, their corpses thrown out, publicly displayed. Marcel calls the dead knights false traitors to the Dauphin. The people take his word for it.
Barbara Tuchman - A Distant Mirror: The Calamitous 14th Century wrote:"Marcel promptly returned to the palace to present the Dauphin with that ever-justifying formula: the deed had been done 'by the will of the people.'
The prince, he said, must show himself at one with the people by ratifying the act and pardoning everyone concerned."
The terrified Dauphin did as he was told.

It doesn't end well for the people

At least 1,000 highly skilled migrants wrongly face deportation, experts reveal

Home Office accused of ‘abusing’ section of Immigration Act designed to tackle terrorism

At least 1,000 highly skilled migrants seeking indefinite leave to remain (ILR) in the UK are wrongly facing deportation under a section of the Immigration Act designed in part to tackle terrorists and individuals judged to be a threat to national security, MPs and experts have said.

In the latest scandal to hit the Home Office after the Windrush crisis, a range of MPs and immigration experts have criticised the use of the controversial section 322(5) of the act, with two saying the crisis-hit department is truly wicked and abusing its power. (Guardian)

I'm drinking some 'crafted apple cider with blackberries', it was quite expensive, and do you know what it tastes like?

An Ice Pop. The Seventies ones. Like it was just in that magical process of melting but still being cold.

Perhaps it's part of that whole nostalgia thing, or perhaps some Hipsters have made cider that tastes like Ice Pops by mistake.

Either way it's quite nice on a night as warm as this.

I just walked through Leeds city centre and it was mildly chaotic, mainly young drunken women in various states of distress, there was one being sick next to the bus station loudly claiming her 'chip pizza' had made her ill.

Earlier in the day it was male gym nuts going topless, mostly wearing shorts and flip flops. I thought they looked like twats but then I guess I wasn't their target audience.

And to get away with this ramble I guess I have to say something about Corbyn.

I guess he's never ordered a chip pizza.

I am mainly drinking vodka and orange - with the vodka fresh from the freezer and the orange juice from the fridge, to link with the whole 'ice pop' thing - and I am reminded of traveling through France on a coach when I was 18 and drinking this with the duty free vodka we'd bought on the boat, feeling all grown up because we could take it whilst various other people who'd pushed it too far in the bar on the boat were throwing up.

Theresa May’s perpetual Brexit and Labour's forsaken base.
I agree with all of this. Wren-Lewis has come to the same conclusions I have and explains his reasoning very well. More than anything, I feel the showdown in the Commons over what kind of Brexit we have needs to come as early as possible. Theresa May should not be allowed to drag this out. EU nationals in the UK and UK nationals in the EU need clarity on where we are headed. Leaving them in limbo for years to come is the worst possible fudge. And that's before you even start to consider the needs of businesses that need sufficient time to prepare for future arrangements.

"Nicky Morgan: For too long, the Party has appeased Brexiteer obsessives. It’s time for One Nation Tories to fight back."
Some sense, but then it's not just brexit where Tories grip on reality fails, such as not accepting what her party has already become.
And for too long the Conservative One Nation tradition has tried to accommodate these demands. Well, enough is enough. I refuse to accept quietly that we become a Party which turns its back on the young, on those from diverse communities and on moderate middle of the road voters who want MPs to talk about the things that make a difference to their lives
And the comments are the usual, rabid nonsense.
