Businesses want a soft Brexit. They like the single market and have a choice of a lot of different countries to move to if we leave it.

The cheek of the woman, when the hundreds of problems (to put it mildly) caused by her and her predecessors at the HO have not yet been resolved ! There is even no right of appeal against the 'new' system's decisions .

I caught a discussion on Today about the problems the Chancellor faces about which taxes he should raise - or rather not cut - to pay for the NHS increase.

And cutting Corporation Tax came up - Lord O'Neill was decidedly sceptical about the idea that cutting CT rates led to greater investment as it hadn't been the case here.

Probation system 'a mess' despite reforms, say MPs

The system for supervising criminals in England and Wales is in a "mess" after reforms failed to meet their aims, MPs have said.

The Commons justice committee said it was "unconvinced" reforms could ever deliver an effective probation service.

In 2014 the system was partially privatised and monitoring extended to those who had served short jail terms.
The government said there had been "challenges" and it is due to publish the results of a review next month.

No, "because of."

R4 segment on probation this morning was a joke. No context at all in terms of how the nationalised service was fine before part of it was privatised and the bit that wasn't privatised is still fine. "There's no need to renationalise" was one quote and "it's only the less serious offenders who are affected" was a complacent remark from our interviewer, as if those who committed lesser offences don't matter - was pulled up a bit by the interviewee who pointed out minor offenders can turn into major offenders. As it's kind of the point of an effective probation system to prevent that, the interviewer really was tying themselves up in knots in an attempt to downplay the failure. And of course no mention of the widespread and unanimous warnings across the board not to privatise probation in the first place that were ignored.

With every policy change the question ought to be asked "What problem is this trying to solve?"

But we know it won't be as the question is always "How can we involve the private sector in this area?"

But let's just stick two fingers up at the EU and leave...

I would argue there is pressure/expectation that you should in certain situations,widowerhood I find is learning to live with varying degrees of pain and developing a different way of relating but feel she is still with me,I actually found it harder when it was an every second weekend relationship.

It's real, the damage policy and actions government leadership insist on causes hardship. I'm one of many people, one of millions of people materially, adversely affected.

Back then, the, nation's health was in a desperate state and there was no such thing as a health service.

Many hospitals were on the brink of collapse. Access to care was determined by your ability to pay and treatments were basic. Surgery, for example, was often performed on the kitchen table.

The health of the nation was so poor that it was common for adults to have all their teeth extracted.

I'm finding it a very useful bit of general historical education , and the 15 minute chunks are handy !

BMW joins Airbus in Brexit warning

The car giant BMW has followed plane maker Airbus in warning of the adverse consequences of Brexit.

BMW UK boss Ian Robertson says it needs clarity by the end of the summer. It makes the Mini and Rolls Royce and employs about 8,000 people in the UK.

Earlier, Airbus, which employs 14,000 people in the UK, warned it could leave if the UK exits the single market and customs union with no transition deal. (BBC News website)

She is also preparing for a vote over a proposed third runway at Heathrow, which she confirmed today the foreign secretary, Boris Johnson – a critic of the airport expansion – would not be attending as he will be on a trip abroad.
