Tomorrow is the last day of this excellent R4 series which has been on every day after WatO, worth listening to from the beginning :-)

National Health Stories

There was a particularly good one on Tuesday

Hip Innovation

In a series tracing decisive moments in the life of our National Health Service, medical historian Sally Sheard reveals how the early years of the NHS gave doctors the opportunity and freedom to innovate, like John Charnley who invented the first effective artificial hip.

With the advent of antibiotics and better anaesthetics, patients now had shorter hospital stays. This left doctors with time on their hands.

Now they could turn their minds to the intractable health problems that plagued their patients. At Wrightington Hospital, near Wigan, patients were in dire need of a remedy for their painful arthritic hips. So Orthopaedic Surgeon, John Charnley, set to work to solve the problem.

The total inappropriateness of basing a system on the minority situation if not satisfying a guess basically of dying within six months the work coach, assessment etc route as well as reforms that create and exacerbate debt so they can claim the told you so about financial irresponsibilty,of course if you don't die within six months subject to the obviously unfair line, sitting at home etc.

The fuckwittery and perniciousness of the "to the most vulnerable",the "bad" news is you haven't satisfied the six months rule.

I've just discovered Tesco Direct is closing down. I'm surprised I hadn't heard anything in the news. Or did I just miss it? Concentrating on groceries, apparently. It's a shame, Tesco Direct was quite a good (decent pay & conditions employer) alternative to Amazon.

Participate in general terms ie.a reasonable level of independence, the trouble being immersed in continual battles for support as well as dealing with illness takes that away,it becomes about that rather than making the best of it,time energy wasted which should be unnecessary.

Are these series of retail establishments (online or physical stores) consolidations and closures related? Were they inevitable? Brexit-related? Worthless Tory government-related?

A mixture of reasons. Department stores in particular are struggling at the moment which does suggest changes in shopping habits are a factor....but....weaknesses in retail businesses tend to become critical during times of lower consumer spending. So, although the retail outlets that have closed are ones that have made mistakes or failed to keep up with new shopping trends, the timing of their demise nevertheless reflects a weakening economic outlook. Getting further credit, for instance, is easier when consumer spending is booming, but a weak retail proposition will struggle to find backers at a time of falling consumer confidence and hence run out of road to turn things around.

So the Tesco move is not without significance. Such a retrenchment from one of our biggest retailers suggests a degree of "battening down the hatches" in anticipation of challenging trading conditions ahead.

I notice that Theresa May has been gifted a Belgian football shirt. It bears the number 10, apparently worn by somebody named Eden Hazard. Very apt since that's what Theresa May is - a bleedin' hazard.

Labour party conference at Warwick University, I think it was the year 2014. Keele University students showed me the way. I get lost when I'm two minutes from destination. We talked later; they wanted to make sure I boarded the correct bus. Everyone must have the basics, housing, healthcare, food and peace enough to study, work and laugh more often than cry. I added the peace, laughing and crying part. Nothing firebrand about these students. They weren't looking for Eden. Enough is fine.

Speaking of "gripped" (which, incidentally, I'm not) it put me in mind of the DJ Kevin Greening and Gripper the dog. Does anyone else here have fond memories? (Kevin Greening died in 2007)

So, how long do we give Milo in UKIP before he is kicked out or resigns his new-found membership?

http://observer.com/2018/06/milo-yianno ... ists-down/
Milo Yiannopoulos has started issuing reporters threatening messages when asked to comment for stories.

“I can’t wait for the vigilante squads to start gunning journalists down on sight,” the right-wing nationalist told Observer over text message, in response to a longer feature in development about an Upper East Side restaurant he is said to frequent.
