May's cabinet still squabbling as Chequers Brexit meeting looms
We need a new word. "Omnishambles" just doesn't cut it anymore. Extraordinary, really.

Snafu is not really strong enough either, how about FUBAR ?

Crossing fingers for no more thundery showers, off to the beach to mow a lawn and have a prowl in the sea.

( Literally sea-walking, very therapeutic for ex-hemiplegic stroke leg, dodgy knees !)

Simon Hoare MP

@Simon4NDorset
The vast majority of MPs on a x party basis will do what’s right for the country, jobs, economy and national interest. It’s not an ego-fest and we all need to remember that
If only.

"UK's latest Brexit proposal is unrealistic, say EU officials"
The prime minister is gathering her squabbling ministers at Chequers on Friday for a one-day discussion to thrash out the UK’s future relationship with the EU. But EU sources who have seen drafts of the long-awaited British white paper said the proposals would never be accepted.

“We read the white paper and we read ‘cake’,” an EU official told the Guardian

Rees-Mogg triggers backlash from fellow Tories angry at his 'blackmail' threat to PM
Several remain-voting Conservative MPs, including ministers, have used Twitter to condemn Jacob Rees-Mogg for threatening the prime ministers.

Certainly high time that your MP had their bluff called (and yes, it is largely a bluff IMO)

A humorous variation goes, “vouloir le beurre, l’argent du beurre et le sourire de la crémière“ — wanting the butter, the money for the butter, and the dairymaid’s smile. Other, mildly bawdy versions claim a little more from the dairymaid that just her smile; you’ll recognize them when you see them.

From the G live blog:
Labour’s Chuku Umunna says the EU Withdrawal Act makes it illegal to do anything that would introduce a hard border in Ireland. But if the UK were to leave without a deal, under WTO rules it would have to impose border controls. Can May confirm then that the Act makes a no deal Brexit illegal.

May says she does not accept that interpretation. After leaving, the UK could decided for itself what it did with the border, she claims.

May dismisses claim EU Withdrawal Act’s Irish border amendment makes no deal Brexit illegal.
And here's an interpretation of the amendment from the institute for government:
Both Houses accepted the Government’s amendment in lieu was agreed which amends the Lords’ clause to refer to the North-South co-operation in the Good Friday Agreement / Belfast Agreement (rather than list the specific areas of co-operation) and reduces the list of new border arrangements to include “physical infrastructure, including border posts, or checks and controls”. It also says this should be subject to an agreement between the UK and the EU rather than the UK and Ireland.

One tangible benefit of Brexit is that the whole of Europe will now be able to interpret correctly the phrase "to have one's cake and eat it"

Hear that David Davis went in to see the PM this morning after not knowing about Number 10's 'new plan', but left the meeting still not having discussed the 'new plan'

May has ruled out keeping the UK in the EEA (European Economic Area) after Brexit, the so-called “Norway” option that would involve remaining in the single market. When the Tory Brexiter Sir Bill Cashasked her about “disturbing reports” that that was what she was planning, she replied:

In relation to the point that he makes about the EEA, I have been clear from the start that is one of the things that the European commission had suggested was on the table. The EEA is not right because the EEA - and particularly in the form that the European commission has proposed it - would not deliver on the vote of the referendum and the vote of the British people.
That sounds like wriggle room.

Paul -- every country has its equivalent the only french version I knew is this --

" “Ils veulent le beurre , l’argent du beurre, et les cuisses de la crèmière “"

Some versions say ‘cul’ but this is a bit more refined .

The most polite IS “a smile from the milkmaid” … but confess I’d never heard it !

" A poll published yesterday revealed 57% of Unite members would back a vote on the final Brexit deal – suggesting the policy of the union could change at its conference this week.
...

Labour says it respects the result of the 2016 EU referendum and so is not supporting calls for a so-called "people's vote" on the final withdrawal agreement.

But Mr Corbyn refused to rule out a change of policy three times when asked about it by Sky News at the weekend.

Elsewhere in the YouGov poll of Unite members, 58% said quitting the single market - which is also Labour policy - would damage Britain.

And 61% said pushing for a free trade deal with the EU was more important than limiting the free flow of migration.
