Job fears as Japanese bid to build Royal Navy support ships
Union warns of setback for shipyard workers if contract goes abroad

Fears are mounting that a billion-pound contract to build a new fleet of ships for the Royal Navy could go to a Japanese company. The move would trigger dismay in UK military circles and would be seen as a major setback for the country’s shipyards, struggling with dwindling order books.

It could also have political consequences as a decision to award the contract to an overseas firm might damage the government.

The National Shipbuilding Strategy makes it clear that Royal Navy warships must be built in the UK for reasons of national security. But ministers confirmed in parliament last week that the new fleet solid support ships, which will carry ammunition and explosives, will not be classed as “warships”, which means they can be built by companies outside the UK.

In an attempt to up the ante, last week Jeremy Corbyn called for more major public contracts to go to British companies to shore up the country’s industrial base following Brexit.

But the government wants to find savings in its defence budget and needs international firms to bid for contracts to keep prices down. (Guardian - my emphasis)

"...claiming child benefit, whether it is actually paid or not, ensures the claiming parent receives NICs while the child is under 12. But a mother (and it’s usually the mother) who does not claim, may fail to build up their full state pension entitlement.

To receive a state pension the parent needs to have paid NICs, or received NICs, for a full 35 tax years. The credits are crucial for stay-at-home parents, as they plug the gap in the NICs record while looking after their children."

- Beware: forgoing child benefit could cost you your state pension

Is claiming child benefit the only mechanism available to government ensuring parents receive a full state pension? People might not know the two are linked and get messed up. It's not right.

All people require 35 years.Well passed that myself,of course some years off (on assumption) to actually getting it.In general it is best to check these things, you can make up gaps, ensure credited, but it gets more expensive in time or time contingent, not just for pension purposes but lest being hit by the last two years requirement for sickness/bereavement allowance purposes, more than a couple of weeks in any and you are screwed/becomes means tested.

It's the only way I know of, if you're a full-time parent not working or claiming any other benefits. Now my youngest is 12 I'm no longer getting NICs covered so if I can't find a job which pays at least £102 a week I won't be building my entitlement to a full state pension. With the new retirement age of 67 I should have enough time to get back on track, but the extension to 35 years does make it feel a little bit more of a pressure and worry tbh. My oldest has Asperger's so has needed a bit more support and so I don't regret being a stay at home mum but it has been difficult financially and will continue to affect my personal finances after they're grown up as I haven't been able to pay into a private pension either. Even so, the NICs I've received via claiming Child Benefit does make me feel a smidge more independent than having to rely on my husband's pension when I retire as women used to have to do, so it's not all bad :)

I have other pensions/pensions to come.In saner times it was possible, indeed Government discounted half contributions in their calculations for the very purpose,to continue such work pension contributions in our situation in non easy fit binaryist flexible fashion. No more.

"The “shambles” remark, in a public accounts committee report last week, referred to a seven-year contract signed in 2015 for NHS England to outsource key services to Capita. Delays in the contract potentially put patients at risk, said the report. Capita was forced to apologise for “unacceptable failings in relation to the initial delivery of this contract” but said it was now meeting most of its targets."
