After lots of front pages telling us that the heatwave was making us all staycate and spend lots of lovely money on ourselves so things were looking up for services
Newsflash! Britain’s service sector stumbled last month, with growth hitting a three-month low -- and Brexit is getting some of the blame. Service sector bosses report that new orders grew at a slower rate last month, with business activity growth also weakening. Another worrying sign: employment growth across the sector fell to a near two-year low. Some companies blamed the tight labour market; others said they were automating business processes so they could run with fewer staff.

I suspect the odd link to it has come up along the way but anyway can I just plug the LSE Brexit Blog - a collection of articles by academics from a range of disciplines (and institutions, although it's hosted by LSE) on the whole leave shebang.

Though much reporting doesn't mention it was the most "minimal" form of apology - ie "sorry for any offence caused".

At other times JC's opponents would have attacked that as insufficient, but right now they see more mileage in portraying him as "weak" instead.

Yes, apologising isn't always bad - certainly the fact our PM almost never apologises for anything (despite numerous reasons to) isn't a plus point in her favour.

Admittedly you'd never find me baying " Ooooh John Doe" with any crowd, but I've always been praying that he's up to the job he has, never having had any executive role so far .

Let's consider my own variation on 'apology' in this case:

" I'm sorry if I offended anyone, but to be clear I'd do the same again ! "

Another categorical one : is " I'm sorry for any offence caused, and I won't do it again !"

Did JC 'apologise' for offence and er leave the rest blank ?

I've been looking around and found the following below.
...the committee on Antisemitism and Holocaust Denial called the IHRA Plenary in Budapest 2015 to adopt the following working definition of antisemitism.
On 26 May 2016, the Plenary in Bucharest decided to: Adopt the following non-legally binding working definition of antisemitism:
Antisemitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.

12 December 2016 - Government to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) working definition of anti-Semitism.
Britain will be one of the first countries to adopt the definition, agreed by the IHRA, an intergovernmental body made up of 31 member countries, in May this year. It states:
"Anti-Semitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of anti-Semitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities."

Three local council byelections yesterday:

Fylde DC - Tory hold with 72% of the vote in a straight fight with Labour. Back in 2003 Ratepayers took one of the seats here, but in 2007 the Tories captured it for a full slate of 3 councillors and have maintained that position with ease since. Last time round they were opposed by just by a single Labour candidate and one independent, which very likely exaggerates the supposed increase of over 20% in their vote since 2015 - but this was clearly still a very solid result. Labour also took advantage of the absence of an Independent (second three years ago) to solidly increase their share.

King's Lynn and West Norfolk DC - another big Tory win with over three quarters of the vote this time, modestly up on 2015. Back in 2003 two Independents were returned here, but the Tories won one of the seats in a 2004 by-election and easily took the other in 2007 when no Indy stood and since then they have not been much troubled. In the last three regular elections, their sole opposition here has come from Labour, but the red team absented themselves this time - none of their replacement opposition hopefuls made much impact now, however. LibDems - who came second back in 2004, repeated that placing now but with a distinctly modest 8% of the vote, just ahead of the Greens who had never stood here before. Last with 6% were UKIP - a long way short of their previous effort here in yet another byelection in 2013, when they came second with close to a quarter of the vote.

Peterborough - a narrow Tory hold which means their one seat overall majority gained in the May elections remains in place. The similar predecessor ward normally voted Tory (though not always - LibDem triumphs at the start of the millennium were followed by a Labour win in 2012 and UKIP coming out on top come their 2014 high point) and come the 2016 all-out elections the redrawn division went 2C/1UKIP before Tories duly made it a full house three months ago, Labour moving into a close second place. This time the Tory winning score was a relatively modest 36%, just three points ahead of Labour - a direct swing to the latter of just over 1% since May (and a somewhat bigger one since 2016, both parties gaining majorly since then from the UKIP collapse) Labour may have been none too pleased to see the LibDems - on 12% which was up four points - and the Greens (not far behind) increasing their shares; this was more than can be said for UKIP whose share halved again to 7% and last place - their recent poll mini-revival remains elusive when it comes to "real" votes.

Just one (Cornish) contest next week.
