A bit of a shocker for the Libs this.

Britain Elects@britainelects

Newquay Treviglas (Cornwall) result:

CON: 45.5% (+13.8)
LDEM: 38.0% (-30.2)
LAB: 16.4% (+16.4)

Con GAIN from LDem.

If only had an expert correspondent to interpret this for us ;-)

Hell's Bells! It's always been bureaucratic, but the examples there show it far worse under the shrinkthestate Tories . Increasingly Kafkaesque suffering for the victims and dysfunction of the public sector. "Lack of resources" indeed ---

@PowellPolitics : Mass immigration is one of the reasons Labour lost in 2010, ask Mrs Duffy. Conservatives won on pledge to cut immigration to ‘tens of thousands’ but they’ve failed as EU free movement ties their hands, instead they’ve targeted non-EU citizens. It’s idiotic and shameful.

@artemis0801 1 hil y a 1 heure : Ludicrous lies. Our government could implement the 3 months rule for EU citizens but can't be bothered to do so because they haven't the resources to process them. And you think in an imaginary post-Brexit they'll behave better to non -EU migrants? Are you for real? Jeez.

Good scary one from yesterday’s NYT in today’s International edition —

With Alex Jones, Facebook’s Worst Demons Abroad Begin to Come Home

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/08/worl ... ation.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Half a dozen examples of causal links between FB Fake News/propaganda and deaths and ethnic cleansing —

“That year, (2012), fake reports of sectarian violence went viral in India, setting off riots that killed several people and displaced thousands. Indian officials put so much pressure on Facebook to remove the posts that American officials publicly intervened in the company’s defense. (NB, see below, last line !!!!)

Reports of Facebook-linked violence only grew in India, and as Facebook expanded to other developing countries, similar stories followed.

“I think in the back deep-deep recesses of our minds, we kind of knew something bad could happen,” Chamath Palihapitiya, a senior executive who left Facebook in 2011, said at a policy conference last year. “We have created tools that are ripping apart the social fabric of how society works.”

There were other warnings, typically from activists or civil society leaders in the developing countries where Facebook’s expansion was fastest and most obviously disruptive. But they were little heeded.”

Modi is not so critical, it helped him to power …

" Since then, Riyadh has also halted academic exchange programmes, giving 15,000 Saudi students one month to transfer elsewhere, and Saudia, the state airline, has announced the suspension of flights to Toronto.

Legions of automated social media bots have begun calling for the secession of Quebec, and Saudi-owned media have also launched a wave of attacks on Canada’s own human rights and prisons record.

Al Arabiya, the pan-Arab news channel, incorrectly told viewers on Wednesday that 75 per cent of prisoners in Canadian jails died before trial. Another Saudi channel aired an interview in which a pundit claimed Canada is the worst country in the world for the treatment of women. "

Just the one local council byelection yesterday:

Cornwall: Tory gain from LibDem on a swing of over 20% since last year, as the LibDems fell from over two thirds of the vote then to less than 40%. This division voted Independent at the inaugural 2009 unitary elections, then (on slightly different boundaries) UKIP in 2013 - both on winning shares of less than a third of the vote in highly fragmented contests. A previous byelection in 2016 then saw the LibDems storm to victory (as UKIP vacated the field, not to reappear as of yet) before seemingly consolidating this as safe for them last year - or so they thought. They were certainly not helped by Labour reappearing and polling a respectable 16% despite their candidate being from some distance away (and in Cornwall, that is important) This was up significantly on their last showing in 2016, though slightly down on three years earlier.

Three contests next week.
