Morning all.

Politics eh? What a mess...August is supposed to be the silly season - this is turning out to be anything but.

In other news 'er indoors had a tumour marker check which came out at 14.5 - anything less than 30 is down as "there's nothing there" - so all good. And I'm working on a couple of local history articles.

Toady this morning -- Martha Kearney did a good job on the Housing Minister, who attempted without success to confuse Social housing and Affordable housing !
Rights for Tenants , well that only means creeping up their rights to a fraction of what they are in France and other European countries
Social housing build will be 6000 next year , an All Time Low !

Justin Webb did his hectoring best with someone from the JVL on the Corbyn / Munich Massacre story , no labour representative available. All I retain from that, on the central point, was that he didn't 'knowingly' commemorate the murderers .

Cynical, I’m sure, but I imagine the Corbyn wreath story was in a pile of things being saved for the election and got shuffled up because Boris was in trouble.

Some interesting comments by those "in the know" about B Johnson today.

Apparently he has employed "minders" whose duties included messing up his hair and making him generally look scruffy prior to appearing in front of the cameras.

I'm sure you will find that as shocking as I did!

What with this and the one earlier about councils being forced to sell off their highest value properties, there's some real u-turns going on with social housing today.

Nobody takes much notice of the "official" unemployment figures these days, a big contrast to when I was a lad in the 1980s.

A woman has activated the ancient Norman rite of Clameur de Haro to protest against the narrowing of a road which she claims would endanger pedestrians and motorists.

Rosie Henderson, from Guernsey, raised the clameur by kneeling and calling for help and reciting the Lord’s Prayer in Norman French. Fully enforceable in Guernsey and Jersey law, it means the construction work in St Peter Port must stop until a court decides the case.

Waste of justice system time really, the fact he was charged with affray rather than ABH suggests the police thought it was six of one and half-a-dozen of the other, intent-wise.

The headline figure is the one governments pretend to believe when it's low. Or because they are REALLY very stupid :-)
The US does it better with the widely available additional figures ...

So you have --
U3 is the official unemployment rate.
U5 adds on discouraged workers and all other marginally attached workers. These people are still unemployed, but not in the market for a variety of reasons.
U6 adds on those workers who are part-time purely for economic reasons.

The U6 unemployment rate counts not only people without work seeking full-time employment (the more familiar U-3 rate), but also counts "marginally attached workers and those working part-time for economic reasons." Note that some of these part-time workers counted as employed by U-3 could be working as little as an hour a week, but they prefer full-time employment but haven't landed it yet. And the "marginally attached workers" include those who have gotten discouraged and stopped looking, but still want to work. The age considered for this calculation is 16 years and over

The current U6 unemployment rate as of December 2016 is 9.20, almost double from what's normally reported as the official U3 rate.

Underemployment and overemployment figures can be found here.
https://www.ons.gov.uk/file?uri=/employ ... ay2018.xls" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Jan-March 2018 figures are 7.8% underemployed and 10.3% overemployed.

Similarly, HOW underemployed are they ?

The media show little interest in looking at the various employment figures, which is why it seems they are not collated, but they're all there on the ONS site. Those without Excel (like me) are reliant on digging through various news articles and if you do you will notice that while unemployment has reduced by 65,000, economically inactive has risen by 77,000.

https://www.bbc.com/news/amp/business-45181079" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Also, the overall number of economically inactive is higher now than the last time the official unemployment rate was this low in 1975, despite the cultural shift to more women working, by about half a million, I think, if I've read the following chart right:

https://www.ons.gov.uk/employmentandlab ... s/lf2m/lms" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

What, exactly, the story is behind these figures, I can't tell, but the slow and slowing wage growth is a clear sign, with such low unemployment figures, that something's not quite right!

Meanwhile ! Jewish Labour members boycott talks with 'intentionally antagonistic' party leaders over antisemitism
Exclusive: Jewish Labour Movement accuses Jeremy Corbyn's team of 'deliberately misleading approach' and 'further inflaming tensions' as they pull out of talks with party's antisemitism committee
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/p ... 91376.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It's been obvious from the very beginning that this was "GET CORBYN ! " and that nothing else would do . Even unconditional surrender on the IHRA etcetc will not be enough . He.has.to.go.

I still haven't read the G's LongRead on BDS ..... :-)

Well no wonder these guys have an issue with the party's stand on Antisemitism. The first objective of this group is ( according to the JLM's website ): Our objects: [1] To maintain and promote Labour or Socialist Zionism[...]. And further on on of its core values is: 'To promote the centrality of Israel in Jewish life and its development[....]' So, given that these guys have a mission statement on their website, to promote the centrality of Israel in Jewish life ( whatever that means) and Zionism, they will not like the distinction between Judaism ( which cannot be criticised) and Israel ( which can). So no surprise that they are trying to get the party line to change on this topic. And it looks like the only way of doing so, is by overthrowing Corbyn.
In the interest of clarity, it would have been nice to include this piece of information in the article.
(Disclaimer: I don't dislike Jews more than followers of any other religion. I do have an intellectual bias towards atheists though. )
