""The church was founded in the US in 2005 by Bobby Henderson as a response to Christian fundamentalists advocating the teaching of creationism in schools. In an open letter, Henderson demanded equal time in science classrooms for Flying Spaghetti Monsterism.

Believers worship an invisible and undetectable god called the Flying Spaghetti Monster, wear colanders on their heads in homage to their deity, revere pirates as the original Pastafarians and vow to reject “crazy nonsense”, be nice to all sentient beings and eat a lot of pasta.

Officially recognised by the New Zealand government, which approved it to conduct marriages in 2015, the church’s status is disputed in many other countries, although several have allowed followers to wear colanders or pirate outfits for ID photographs.""

I enjoyed her performances at the PAC but …

“” it gets better. Confronted with all this, Mrs Hodge has protested that she has done nothing wrong and paid all the tax that is due. Every penny of it. But that’s the whole point! She has, of course, done nothing in any way illegal and, yes, paid everything she owes in tax. Which is also true of all the businesses she is so happy to lambast, and whose reputations she is so keen to destroy.””

And of course Pollard retweeted her Corbynophobic ravings !

Three local council byelections this week:

Neath/PortTalbot - starting off with a real shocker, this saw an Independent gain (the candidate represented this single member ward from 2004 to 2012) with well over half the vote - from Labour, who fell from over half last year to just 13 per cent now; also coming third behind Plaid Cymru who had never stood here before. As is often the case, such startling results are mainly explained by local factors - the outgoing Labour councillor resigned expressing dissatisfaction with the local leadership, and then backed the winner. In addition to this, the unfortunate Labour hopeful came from almost the other end of the authority - often a recipe for sub-par results, though not always as spectacularly as this. Two remaining Indy hopefuls together matched the Labour score, whilst not to miss out on some embarrassment of their own the Tory hopeful ended up with all of 4 (yes, FOUR) votes. Less than half the number who nominated them!

North Yorkshire CC - LibDem gain from Tory in a double member division that voted a full slate for them in 2005 (the first election on these boundaries) and 2013, though the Tories took the second seat in 2009 which meant it maybe wasn't a total shock when they took both seats last year. However the LibDems made no mistake this time, with an increase of nearly 20 points to comfortably over half the vote and a double figure swing. The absence of both UKIP and Green candidates this time (as opposed to 2017) helped ensure the Tory drop wasn't that big, however - whilst Labour took almost exactly 10 per cent, in the same ballpark as their last three showings here.

Bury - Labour hold with 64% of the vote, a five point increase on this May and a swing of about 7% from the second placed Tories. This is one of the few wards in the borough that has voted Labour in every election since the 2004 all-outs (only in their 2008 nadir were things even particularly close) and results in recent years have been remarkably consistent from the red team's point of view. UKIP managed to come second here in the 2012-15 period, but in their first showing since then had to settle for a rather more modest 5%. Green support roughly halved since earlier this year, but still got them ahead of the LibDems who got just 2% in their first appearance since 2011.

Busiest week of the month next time - six contests.
