Even though so many other countries already do it , it has only just penetrated through to the UK. The medicinal use of cannabis-based treatments was another example this morning, demonstrating a curiously hidebound mindset. Also a complete disregard for the suffering of the child in this morning's broadcast.

The list of those ‘assisting’ Mueller grows, new names (Pecker and Weisselberg).

Genuine LOL's on this one --

""Five people close to Trump are now said to have struck deals with Robert Mueller, to cooperate with the investigation into collusion between Trump’s campaign and Russia.

As Trump spent the last few decades exhorting The Art of the Deal, he could surely never have imagined his former associates would so willingly take his advice.

Trump’s longtime fixer Michael Cohen, former deputy campaign manager Rick Gates, former national security adviser Michael Flynn, tabloid executive and friend David Pecker and Trump Organization chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg have all picked up on the president’s zeal for the deal. Each has reportedly entered into pacts with Mueller.

Trump has long praised dealmakers and berated those unable to make deals. He repeatedly criticized Barack Obama for not making deals. Unlike the five men above.""

This small block next to the A12 packs in 60 studios. Yet converting offices into tiny living spaces doesn’t even need planning permission
It's not really the planning permission that's at issue here, but the lack of minimum legal space requirements for habitable homes.

We just got a new kitten.

What's everyone else's excuse ;)

Seriously, weighing up the cost versus protein content of various cat/kitten foods is both mind boggling and time consuming, politics isn't getting a look in. Any tips gratefully received.

Genuinely - when I hear or see Vince Cable, I think "Why are they still giving this has-been bloke house-room?" Then, belatedly, I think "Ah! I know - it's because he's the Lib Dem leader!" and feel foolish for having forgotten. He's really made that much of an impression.

Classic tabby. Not sure how old. 2-3 mths I think. He brought his favourite toy with him, a little ball with a bell inside, and seems to be settling in well. He's currently playing quite intently with a shoelace!

Six local council byelections this week:

North Warwickshire DC - Tory hold, but a close one as they beat Labour by less than 5% (a swing of over 9% to the reds) in a straight fight in a ward they had made safe in recent years; it split 1LD/1C in 2003, but the Tories narrowly won both seats in 2007 and easily beat Labour in 2011 after the LibDems departed the scene. Three years ago, UKIP polled over 20% here - people may conclude from this that their vote went wholesale to Labour, but in reality things are more complex than this and there will have been a great deal of "churn".

East Hertfordshire DC - LibDem gain from Tory in a single member ward that has been unchanged since the inaugural 1973 elections and then voted Independent, the only previous time it had not returned the blue team until this week. Most of those wins were by big margins too - and in 2007 they were actually unopposed - which makes the LibDem win (in their first ever showing here) with two thirds of the vote all the more remarkable - this was also a council which voted in a 100% Tory representation in 2015, though some Independents have since emerged and the monolith has now been cracked open further. Tories down from two thirds themselves last time to 30% now, Labour also squeezed to just 3%.

Wirral - Labour hold, though with under half the voted compared with 60% earlier this year. This ward voted in 3 LibDems at the 2004 all-outs and was held by them comfortably in the succeeding years, but Labour broke through on GE day in 2010 and coalition then melted the LibDem strength typically quickly - they haven't even finished second since 2011. Tories did in 2012 and 2015 (now absent UKIP took runners up spot in their peak year of 2014) as well as this May, and got a healthy six point increase in their vote now - they are now within a mere 20% of victory! LibDems also up - though still well down on their old strength - followed by an Independent who was a former LibDem, then Labour, councillor here; their 5% was some way down on their previous showing in 2016 when they finished runner up. Greens last on 2%, more than halved.

Rushcliffe DC - Tory hold, though with a double figure drop in their vote to 40% and a swing of exactly 10% to second placed Labour. They easily won here in 2015 - the first post boundary change elections - even though the similar predecessor ward had been held by the LibDems since the 1980s, which makes it all the more surprising that UKIP were the only other party standing then - again they polled a respectable vote of over 20%, and again they absented themselves on this occasion (indeed, from all six of these contests) Some of their vote likely contributed to the 18% gained by an Independent candidate, the formerly Tory winner three years ago who resigned both his seat and from the party after falling out with the administration here - though given the circumstances, quite a few expected a (still) stronger result. LibDems reappeared this time but got just 7%, though that was over twice the score for the last placed Green.

Knowsley - Labour hold with just over half the vote in a ward which returned three Labour councillors in the 2016 all-out post boundary change elections, but where they suffered a shock defeat to an Independent earlier this year - discontent over that and dropping a different seat to the Greens in this once monolithic Labour fortress was reportedly behind a council leadership change just days after the elections. If that had any effect on this result it was beneficial to Labour, as their share increased from earlier this year and the Independent (as with the winner three months ago, a former Labour councillor) got just short of 40% now. LibDems used to win the predecessor wards here in pre-coalition days, but their first showing for a while saw them net just 6% - though that was double the Tories share as they dropped from May.

Cornwall - LibDem hold with just over half the vote, little changed from last year. They have held this seat in the two other unitary elections - 2009 and 2013 - also, though last time this double member division saw the Tories make it relatively close. Any hopes they may have had of bettering that now, however, were likely dashed when their best placed candidate from a year ago decided to stand as an Independent this time - and they took a quarter of the vote, almost double that of the "official" Tory who finished in a rather distant third place with a drop of some 25 points. Labour last with 8%, a slight drop since last year.

Just one contest next week to conclude the month, as is usual September will be busier.

A day trip to Cherry Tree and a panel of sense

This is a taste of what they found.

It’s a 7 minute walk along an unlit, tree lined lane to the property. Can you imagine walking for 7 minutes to get from the pavement to your home?
The only signage was the care providers name. There was no evidence anyone lived there.
The fence was so high and made of wire in places that it resembled a young offenders unit. When the panel queried this they were told it was because one person had a habit of trying to run away. ‘But there’s always a minimum of 1:1 support’, puzzled the panel.
No smoking signs were dotted about. ‘This doesn’t happen in people’s homes’, said the panel.
Cherry Tree didn’t have a small scale and domestic feel.
The site is very isolated with only the occasional dog walker and ‘courting couples’ entering it.
The timetable of activities was regimented and there was no interaction between people living in the different houses on site. ‘That’s odd’, pondered the panel. ‘One of the arguments for extending the provision was to allow two young men in Cherry Tree more social interaction’. Staff gave different reasons why this was; compatibility issues/lack of staff training.
One of these young men was living in Cherry Tree because he enjoyed rambling. In two years he has not been rambling.
