I think it just dates from the times of alternate spellings for the same thing/place, before these things got "standardised".

The town of Frome - pronounced with an "oo" as in Typhoo - sits upon the river Frome - pronounced with an "o" as in oh.

It's a code, I think, to sort out the outlanders from the locals.

Like posh English names that are pronounced nothing like they're spelt, like Beauchamp or Featherstonehaugh, to trip up the uninitiated.

Of course, posh people probably can't help being asses, it's probably handed down through their genes along with the absurd names. (Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson never really stood a chance). But Sajid Javid surely had a real choice not to be an ass. He has certainly never stood out as a particular ass before. Maybe it's catching.

No, don't think so.

Is a co-ordinated attack on all members of Friends of Israel going on or something?

Both Leslie and Ryan have consistently voted in line with the Labour whip this parliament and their voting records generally seem to be more or less in line with core Labour values. They didn't help the government like Field of Hoey so I assume it's something else they have in common that has led to them being targeted.

They must have said things that have upset Corbyn devotees, I guess, but picking on pro-Israel MPs at a time when relations with the wider Jewish community seem to be thawing a little seems a bit, well, deliberately and unhelpfully provocative.

Current Tory government MPs have failed upholding their Tory code of conduct
They've not acknowledged their failings, let alone make efforts to correct wrongs

And Leslie is a Co-operative MP.

Could strain relations there.

Indeed, it's possible the Co-op may review it's direct involvement in politics. It seriously considered pulling out a few years ago.

Well, maybe the Co-Op Party shouldn't put its weight behind such utterly terrible people as Leslie, then?

Zero sympathy is overstating it, tbh.

EDIT: though this was apparently just a branch meeting, not the whole CLP - that is apparently coming later. I look forward to it.
