Fascinating one on DJT's "Paul Manafort is a good man", who would even go so far as faking accusations of anti-Semitism, along with other forms of character-assassination --

"" Under Manafort’s direction, Yanukovych’s party made advances in parliamentary elections, and in 2010, he was elected Ukraine’s president. He served until 2014, when he was ousted by public protests and fled to Moscow.

Court documents show that Manafort devised a complex and secretive lobbying campaign to rebrand Yanukovych, who was dogged by corruption charges, as an earnest, pro-Western reformer.

American law, seldom enforced until recently, requires that anyone lobbying government officials or working to shape public opinion in the United States on behalf of a foreign government or political party register with the Justice Department.

But Manafort never registered. And prosecutors said he was so intent on avoiding public disclosure that he worked to persuade one firm assisting the effort to not disclose its work publicly, either. The firm did not do so until a year later, after its role in the Manafort project ended.

Manafort helped form a Brussels-based organization, the European Centre for a Modern Ukraine, as a mouthpiece for Yanukovych. It contracted with two prominent D.C. lobbying and communications firms — Mercury and the Podesta Group — to advance the strongman’s interests and obscure Manafort’s role.""

Harri said that moment, as well as Johnson’s miscalculation that the Leave vote would win the EU referendum, “raises questions about his political courage as well as his integrity”.....
.....The tragedy for me is he could have been Prime Minister and would have been a good one. But now he’s a very different prospect.”
Disturbing, that despite this he still seems to think thar Boris possesses qualities that could/ would have been a good pm.

Hahaa, used my free-reads to find the rest of it after a tip-off --

""Having campaigned against the EU alongside the Labour leader and shadow Chancellor all her political career, Hoey described Mr Corbyn and Mr McDonnell as Labour’s “best hope” in terms of Brexit.

Asked whether it was accurate to described them as “staunch Brexiteers”, she replies: “Well they are, of course. I’m delighted.

"That’s why, in a way, having Jeremy there is very important on that particular issue because I think both he and John McDonnell, who were at every single lobby with myself and others over the period of the last 25 years on EU matters - voting on EU matters, voting against the Constitution, voting against Maastricht - all of those things we did - I think they understand from a different perspective why leaving is important.”"

The fact they didn't lift a finger to help her in her recent local "troubles" is arguably of more significance there.

Six local council byelections this week:

Pembrokeshire - Independent gain from the Tories, not the most surprising outcome given that - quite apart from Indies winning here in the three previous elections to 2017 - the previous incumbent forfeited their seat after being convicted of serious sexual offences. Even so, the sheer collapse of the Tory vote - from nearly 40% last year to less than 8% now - was fairly spectacular. The winner this time had narrowly missed out a year ago, and no fewer than five (!) other Independents stood - which meant that roughly a third of the vote was a decent victory total, even if it was down a bit on last time. Two other Indies came ahead of the Labour candidate whose 11% was roughly halved on a year ago (the reds were returned unopposed here in 1999, but lost five years later and haven't done that much since) whilst one of the others finished above the sixth-placed Tory and two below, the last of all polling under 5%.

New Forest DC - Tory hold, but they were run close by the LibDems who achieved a swing of over 11% in their favour in a ward where they won both seats back in 2003 and split with the Tories in 2007, but found themselves easily beaten post-coalition. This meant that the Tories won by around 5% whereas they had trounced the LibDems about 2 to 1 three years ago - each party finding themselves within a few points of the 40% mark. Labour'a share also roughly halved since 2015, their decline very closely mirroring the 12% by the third placed Independent who entered the fray this time - they are also a former LibDem, which may not please the yellows given that it was a pretty close contest.

Maidstone DC - Tory hold, again with a decent swing to the LibDems - indeed an even bigger one of about 18%, but the difference is this ward has been super-safe for the Tories since it returned two members for them in the 2002 all-out elections - at that election and quite a few subsequent ones the sole opposition to them came from the Greens, who polled respectably then and managed a peak of approaching 40% in the 2006 straight fight, but their support has since dwindled and they sat this May's election out. LibDems came second then and increased by almost 20 points now to over a third of the vote, but such was the previous safeness for the Tories that they still finished over twenty points clear. Labour down to 5%, whilst the Greens reappeared but could only manage 3% now.

Cambridge DC - Labour hold, though again the LibDems managed a double figure swing in their favour in a ward where they have some past strength - things split 2Lab/1LD in the 2004 all-outs, and whilst the LibDems lost that seat two years later they regained a councillor in a subsequent 2010 "double header" before losing it in 2014. They also won the Cambs CC seat covering this area (then with identical boundaries) in 2005 and 2009 before Labour won it in 2013, so increasing by 16 points this time didn't come totally from nowhere even if Labour still won fairly handily with approaching half the vote. Greens finished second here in 2015 and 2016 but dropped to 9% now, Tories (who managed to win here in the 1980s!) also dropped a few points to 6%.

Charnwood DC - Tory hold with an increase of their vote compared with both 2015 and a previous 2017 byelection here, they now have close to half the vote. Especially given the other results this week, most expected any challenge to come from the LibDems - they shared the seats in 2003 and 2007 when they and the Tories won one each, though they lost it in 2011 they won a seat back in another 2014 byelection before losing it very narrowly a year later and then coming a clear second last year. As it was, their share crashed to just 12% this time - down some 20 points on the last few contests - and it was Labour (who did previously manage second in 2011) who moved up to a very respectable runners-up spot. UKIP and Greens both stood here for the first time - the kipper had been an Independent a year ago and their 5% now was a slight improvement on that and also ahead of the last placed Green on 3%.

Lambeth - Labour hold with approaching 60% of the vote, a modest increase since May. Unlike some parts of this now strongly Labour borough this has always been a strong area for the party, returning three councillors without fail in every election since the present boundaries came into force in 2002. Earlier this year there was some minor turbulence when a former left-wing Labour councillor stood as an Independent and polled decently - almost taking runners-up spot ahead of the Greens (who have finished second here, albeit distantly, in all elections on the present boundaries save for 2010) and their vote seemed to go Green now as they had a double figure increase to 30%. LibDems best of the also rans with 5% (some way short of their second place on GE day eight years ago) meaning they leapfrogged the Tories who dropped slightly, followed by a Womens Equality candidate and finally UKIP, who scored less than 1% in what would have been deeply unpromising territory for them even in their better years.

Six contests again next week.

Stop THE PRESS! A Nick Cohen that doesn’t mention Corbyn !

.https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfr ... no-brainer" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

For some time now I’ve been wondering when the hell will the LP take the obvious route to being the sensible party of Law and Order . —

“” Any party that was serious about law and order would reverse the disastrous consequences of Osborne’s term as chancellor. (Consequences that Osborne neurotically avoids mentioning in his London Evening Standard.) It would build prisons that could rehabilitate inmates rather than leave them under the rule of gangsters. It would not just recruit more police officers but more social workers who might divert the young from crime. Until change comes, crime is far more of a risk-free career than the complacent imagine. “”

££££ ?
Let the BoE sell some of its QE assets before interest rates go up again and build some decent prisons, at the same time firing the chief wankers at HMRC for collaboration with the celebs and powerful and replacing with real pros so we get more money back to hire more staff. cont. p92
